If you asked a Classical Greek whether they were part of the same "cultural group" as the Romans they would've laughed in your face, and if you asked a Roman if they shared the Carthaginians' culture or vice versa, I would expect to get hit.

The best route you can take is to probably make peace with the fact that people trying to uncover African history mostly aren't African and stay informed because there is plenty of history to be uncovered. Because there is so little written history left, I'd just try to get a comprehensive image based on archeology and anthropology. SSA seems to have discovered iron working all on it's own so probably there's plenty more culture to be discovered.
