is something fucking wrong with etherdelta? whenever I try and buy coins it starts a metamask transaction saying I don't have enough eth, rather than trying to take them out of my etherdelta contract wallet(where the eth actually is)

You need eth on both wallets. ED sends a 0ETH transaction with your buy order, you need to pay the fee.
