>Herbivore men[1] or grass-eater men[2] (草食(系)男子 Sōshoku(-kei) danshi) is a term used in Japan to describe men who have no interest in getting married or finding a girlfriend.[3] The term herbivore men was also a term that is described as young men who had lost their "manliness".[4][5][6] The term was coined by the author Maki Fukasawa in an article published on 13 October 2006.[7][8][9][10]
>Surveys of single Japanese men conducted in 2010 found that 61% of men in their 20s and 70% of men in their 30s considered themselves to be herbivores.[11] Japan's government views the phenomenon as one possible cause of the nation's declining birth rate.[12]
Overworked. Relationships take work and emotional investment, hard resources to spare when you're constantly stressed the fuck out.
As for "marriage" specifically, it's a dying institution everywhere in the world where it can't be forced on people I arranged marriages.
The issue will partially fix itself when automation takes over 80% of the job market and everyone is living on welfare.

There is no way the percentage is that high .

It's a psycho-spiritual condition when the culture loses its ability to integrate boys into society and fails provide them with the skills or the desire to make the transition from boyhood to manhood. Consumer culture further compounds the problem by indulging them with distractions such as video games and porn which further stem the need to go out into society at large.

As long as the Japanese hold the line and keep the borders closed the problem will eventually take care of its self. However if like the west the Japanese give into to temptation and try to prop their civilisation up with millions of foreigners imported for cheap labour. Then the cold hard logic of differential demographics will end them just as surely as it will end us.

Japan isn't overworked. They have a shorter work year than the Americans or British, several other developed countries, and pretty much every second world country.

Why should it be fixed? Japan has a higher population density than almost every single European country.
Lucas Roberts
>Why should it be fixed? Because Japan's population will be incredibly old in a few years with a small number of able bodied adults taking care of tens of millions of retirees. This isn't specific to Japan either, just more noticeable. There's two ways to solve this:
1. Immigration, most likely from China and Korea. 2. Death panels.
Easton Walker
But to do they realy relax on vacation? Here in Germany they to stuff like 10 christmas markets, in different cities, in 3 days
Eli Smith
Isn't really as much of a problem as people make it out to be. A decrease in population over time should be good for Japan, especially for overcrowded areas like Tokyo of course. Also, it isn't just men contributing to the decrease in birthrate and marriage.
Camden Robinson
I don't know, but you can't exactly measure that, can you? The point is that Japan doesn't actually work much. Except for a tiny number of people, corporate climbers. Other countries that work more than they do don't have the same issues with e.g. suicide. stats.oecd.org/Index.aspx?DataSetCode=ANHRS

A better question is "what the hell is wrong with japanese women!?" if the men dont want nothing to do with them
Grayson Foster
Anything that's done to increase birth rates now wouldn't have an effect in increasing production for 20-30 years, anyway. And by that point, maybe technology will have solved the problem.
>And by that point, maybe technology will have solved the problem. Literally the opposite bro. People are living longer and longer in increasingly helpless states. Employment opportunities for servants for old people are going to skyrocket. Technological advancement is going to make the problem far worse.

Immigration can help them but Japs are too stupid and racist, so they will just fade to irrelevance once they no longer have the population and strong economy to compete in a global marketplace.

After women entered the workforce, becoming a housewife was not their only career option any more, it wasn't necessary for them any more to enter a lasting relationship with a suitable partner. Instead they can get in and out of short-term relationships and one-night stands with top tier men, not having to bother with the bottom tiers. Most of these guys realise that they're unattractive to women, lacking either naturally good looks and charm or otherwise high social status through wealth or talent, thus they withdraw and dedicate themselves to their own interests and hobbies instead of wasting an ungodly amount of time and effort on something which in the end doesn't lead anywhere.

>The concept used is the total number of hours worked over the year divided by the average number of people in employment. The data are intended for comparisons of trends over time; they are unsuitable for comparisons of the level of average annual hours of work for a given year, because of differences in their sources. Part-time workers are covered as well as full-time workers.
Japan has a lot of part-timers and entry-level employees who don't even make enough to be financially independent. Those in regular employment bring up the average by working ridiculous hours. The end result is a lot of people either not making enough to support a family, or being too busy to have one in the first place.
Ayden Morris
Capitalism and the half-complete transformation of gender roles are rough.
Men, especially in Japan, are expected to be the primary breadwinner even though the vast majority of women have careers. Women are somewhat more picky about husbands than they used to be, because only the most avowedly feminist woman will be comfortable marrying a man who makes less money than her.
Right now, even though work is tight, men are expected to not only have a steady job but make more money than the average woman. As traditionally male working class jobs are quickly disappearing thanks to automation and outsourcing, men often find themselves outcompeted by women for white-collar jobs that demand a more stereotypically feminine skill set.

I don't see why this is any worse than what is happening in the West where people don't marry and don't have children because they are huge hedonists who live for their base pleasures. At least the Japanese are not drugging themselves.
At least Japan will still be Japan, even if their population drops. And Japan is already over populed.

They didn't have a job in the sense you sell your labor for wages. They did however put in a massive amount of labor, especially on family farms. Household work back in the day was extremely arduous and time consuming. No washing machines, disposable diapers, dishwashers, hot water, and the expense of new textiles meant they were constantly working to keep the home together. On top of that, they would do much of the less physically demanding farmwork that only a man can do, such as herding sheep and goats, planting ans tending vegetable gardens, preserving foods, making soap, shearing and spinning, and carrying water.
Christopher Peterson
And none of that resulted in an income of their own, which is the whole point.

It did.
A woman needed a man to support her. In most western countries women were not even allowed to sign a contract.
Women were economically dependent on men, which is a historical fact. When women got rights and entered the workforce they did not depend on men any more and could afford to be more picky with their choice of partners.
Brandon Gomez
