Sniper kill counts are the most inflated bullshit numbers ever. Unlike fighter pilots where the kill count system is actually pretty sophisticated, snipers often literally just walk around and claim every corpse they see. I've read Vasili Zaitsev's book and it's full of such unverifiable nonsense, the accounts probably happened only in his head.

Sniper kill counts are the only kill counts in war you can actually prove, since they only target the kind of people who would be reported by name to have been killed.
As a sniper you don't shoot the first guy you see, you only shoot at people in command uniforms.
