You're right in the sense that Marius created the precedent of soldiers fighting for their generals. But his reforms are what made Rome the military might that it was. Having soldiers fund their own equipment with rank depending on social class is fucking retarded. A professional, standing army is much better and the fact is that Rome's worst military defeats occurred prior to the creation of the Legionary.
