Why didn't Sparta have its walls?

Sparta was the only Greek city with no defensive walls after they had been demolished at the order of Lycurgus

Same reason Rome had no good walls until Aurelian. Because they didn't need them.

That was because the Spartan where apparently enough to defend the city state. Pride in their martial culture and ability to fight.

"""City"""
Sparta was 90% barracks

>brave men are a city's strongest defense

Paraphrasing.

You know why user. You posted it in your pic.

BECAUSE OF THREE REASONS:

1. WALLS ARE DETRIMENTAL FOR HEALTHY SOCIOCULTURAL DEVELOPMENT, STUNTING NATIONAL SPIRIT.

2. WALLS WERE UNNECESSARY SINCE THEY WERE ALREADY SURROUNDED BY MOUNTAINS.

3. THE BEST DEFENCE OF A CITY IS THE CITY’S PEOPLE ITSELF, NOT WALLS; WALLS INDUCE LETHARGY, THUS, MAKING THE CITY MORE VULNERABLE THAN IF IT DID NOT HAVE WALLS.

But why not keep the walls if they are still functional?

user, it was because of spartnan culture and to give them more drive to fight and defend the city. Several other´s already posted several points on why it was done. They where basically the only ones.

See

Because walls are racist as fuck I bet you voted for Drumpf

>Mexican complaining about walls
Who could've seen that coming

Sparta likely never actually had walls. Lycurgus is mostly an invention to give all the Spartan quirks a starting point.

>Being this retarded

Go back to your shit board.

Sparta is the most vastly overrated ancient culture. They weren't that special.

What's your source for Lykourgos demolishing walls, rather than simply not having them in the first place? I doubt Sparta had an encircling wall of any significance prior to Nabis.

Also, on a practical note, it would be difficult to encompass all of Sparta in a wall given that Amyclae is at a distance.

And you based those claims on what, exactly?

cherry pickle rick

>Sacred band of Thebes
That's cheating

Imagine being such a brainlet that you can ignore all the attention Sparta received in the ancient world, ignore how unique Sparta was compared to the rest of the world, cast aside how Sparta maintained the Hellenic world and preserved Athens, and just say "hurr Sparta isn't that special." True brainlet behaviour.

What is his citation for Lykourgos pulling down a wall that encompassed all of Sparta? That would be a huge fortification.

And? What about it? Their most famous battle, the last stand at thermopylae wasn´t all that important either. It´s importantce today lies in the fact, I paraphrase, that they defended their freedom to the last from the persians.Even if every other greek that wasn´t spartan was nearly forgotten in that battle.

Click on the next battle in your shitty wikipedia link. Epaminondas dead on the field of battle. Also, the "Strength" column is HIGHLY misleading, there weren't 10,000 - 11,000 Spartan hoplites, and in any event the allied forces did not engage. Damn.

Also, Thebes quickly racked up a string of defeats and was ultimately burnt to the ground by its Northern opponents. Sparta, meanwhile, remained proud and inviolate.

Also, attached. Thebes tries to prop up Arcadia, they promptly get btfo.

Boeotians are clown tier humans who are mostly known for being mentally deficient traitors who liked to have sex with children.

...The fact that no historical trace of any walls has been found?

>the battle where Spartan power was ended permanently
>cherrypicking
ok

They had a strong martial culture and strong power projection for such a small city-state but they absolutely do not deserve the attention they've been getting ITT. They lost battles just like everyone else, their power waxed and waned just like everyone else. And in the end, the very culture which produced their exceptionally disciplined armies led to the city's withering into nothing as it simply could not replace the losses it suffered in its many wars.

>they died fighting to the last man
So? This has happened plenty of times in history. Yes it was dramatic, yes it was symbolic, but like you said its actual outcome wasn't even all that important. Thermopylae doesn't make Sparta special.

>the Thebans eventually lost
It's true, Macedon forced them to submit some years later. But that battle was still the beginning of the end for Sparta.

> Sparta, meanwhile, remained proud and inviolate.
Yeah as it slowly declined into nothingness and eventually became a quaint tourist attraction for wealthy Romans.

Maybe because the wall was removed, moron.

I meant to say, that we can admire and like it anyway, because of it.. The other city states weren´t all that great either in the period of Spartas decline. Since it was basically Athens who was the most important city state at the time.

Admire it if you'd like but it's still pretty overrated and wasn't all that special.

>thinks Spartan power was ended permanently
wrong.jpg. Major setback, to be sure, but Sparta remained notably independent from Macedonian power when practically everyone else on the mainland succumbed. Further, there were a number of resurgences and constant fighting. Sparta's power and independence continued long after Thebes was reduced to cinders and fading memories of degenerate boy fucking idiots.

>Sparta was not an eternal and invincible empire
Therefore it's overrated and not special? You're probably a butthurt argive or an arcadian mountain man.

>Sparta was ended after Leuctra and declined into nothingness

So, so wrong. Again, a number of resurgences and continued warfare up until they are finally outright defeated and lose independence almost 200 years later.

Which is my whole point. Admiring it despite the flaws. Well, anyway, I´m to tired to continue this discussion. Good Night user.

Plenty of shit was removed over the centuries, yet traces of them still remain.

That doesn't support, nor prove, your rather ridiculous farfetched claims.

>literally doesn't have a primary source citation for Lykourgos pulling down a fortification that encompassed Sparta.

>literally doesn't have any archeological record for an ancient wall that encompassed Sparta.

>literally calls you the moron.

are all-caps posters only a Veeky Forums phenomenon?

I've only seen them here, mostly with muslim/arabic names. It cracks me up honestly.

>being an anal devastated Mexican

>strong and inviolate

Their being special lied in their making others think they were special.

>Sparta
>Martial culture
lmao when will this meme end?
