Was that comic also mocking on the murrican fat meme? I doubt it considering the period, but it would be funny if even back then it was a meme.

No, it's the personified vision of imperial expansion. Things get weird fast.

>No anglo-american empire ruling the world forever

feels bad man

Democracies aren't supposed to take over the world.

Neither the United States nor the UK is a democracy, and what you've just bleated is some general notion that is yours only, and not a hard-and-fast rule of world history, or anything even close to it.

So if you're trying to make some sort of rhetorical or normative point, you've failed miserably in every way that it is possible to fail to make your point.

he needs to have a boner with Gadsden purchase written on it

Who the fuck is Bryan?

William Jennings Bryan. Notice the deflated balloon labeled "Goldbugism" below.

Wrong board you fucking idiot.

Fair enough, it's just my opinion. I don't think that the US gains anything really substantial from owning Puerto Rico. I'm not saying all territories are bad, but would you agree that some places on this planet might not be worth occupying?

It's a blue board.

Now it seems very improbable but at the time was it a reasonable hypothetical that the US would continue to absorb more territory?

>Democracies aren't supposed to take over the world.
Tell that to the Athenians.

>It's a blue board.
Yes, and historical dicks are allowed, just like /a/ allows nipples as long as it's from the sauce material.

I think so. In Gray Brechin's Imperial San Francisco it was clear that the city viewed itself in 1900 as "Rome on the Pacific". Considering the Samoan Crisis of just a decade before and the purchase of additional islands by the Germans in 1899, the idea of expansion might not be too far fetched.

Good to know. It seems like much of the source material for this comes from a cartoonist from Puck named Joseph Keppler.

Only a Canadian could be this polite and conciliatory when getting called out via contentious language. That said I respectfully and delightedly accept your concession, and I appreciate the fun historical cartoons you've been posting.

Kek, somebody needs to shop Kelly into this

It "might" no longer be profitable to own Puerto Rico but the reality of it is that the US turned their agriculture based on Coffee, chocolate, sugar, tobacco, coconuts for oil and annatto and other species and products into a single thing, sugar, they tossed loans at impoverished spaniards for their lands then kept raising up the payments until they had to be evicted (usually by force), US companies pretty much owned most of the land for well over 50 years, and not only that, their culture and identity where completely destroyed just for the sake of "muh sugar" and then to make it all better the FBI and OSS backed up a cokehead socialist governor who used socialist/communist ideas that only helped make people poorer and more dependent on guvment gibs.
