Ethiopia

Why does Ethiopia manage to do better economically compared to most Sub Saharan nations despite never being colonized?

Because it was never colonized.

It's probably the same reason they didn't get colonized.

but Mussolini went into Ethiopia

Ethiopia is poor as shit
Easy to grow fast if you start at nothing

Henry Louis Gates said it was an occupation rather then a colonization.

>In Rome, Mussolini proclaimed Italy’s king Victor Emmanuel III emperor of Ethiopia and appointed Badoglio to rule as viceroy.

He never said it wasn't poor he just said that it was doing better then most African countries retard

More Arab genes making them more human like.

It really isn't. It's in the bottom half of African countries by hdi

and he answered you in part

I'm pretty sure it's one of the largest African economies. My brother works in Ethiopia so I keep a close eye on the region, although it has some problems like ethnic tension and refugees from Somalia and Eritrea, they seem to be making progress without relying on China.

Most of east Africa is in the 7-10% region, massive influx of Chinese investment into their economy and infrastructure.
Add to that that the Ethiopian Government still has some commie tendencies and wants to steer the country into a certain direction economically, different that the anarchic capitalism that plague other SS nations.

It's also the second or third most populous country in all of africa, so of course it has a big economy

True

Ethiopia is an outlier. I have big-brained evidence.

"In this paper, we construct a new database on the European share of the population during colonization and examine its association with the level of economic development today. We find: (1) a strong and uniformly positive relationship between colonial European settlement and development, (2) a stronger relationship between colonial European settlement and economic development today than between development today and the proportion of the population of European descent today; and (3) no evidence that the positive relationship between colonial European settlement and economic development diminishes or becomes negative at very low levels of colonial European settlement, contradicting a large literature that focuses on the enduring adverse effects of small European settlements creating extractive institutions. The most plausible explanation of our findings is that any adverse effect of extractive institutions associated with minority European settlement was more than offset by other things the European settlers brought with them, such as human capital and technology."

they are more pious. though, being tortured by colonials would have made them more pious

that chart is not per capita
the growth is nice but Ethiopia having the secong highest population but the eighth largest GDP is not particularly impressive

It's been a cohrent political entity for centuries whilst many subsaharan countries were tribes until Europeans drew up national borders.

Being conquered doesn't mean you were colonised.

colonisation was a good thing

Stupid nigger, Ethiopia is one of the shitholes of Apefrica.

They claim to have the Ark of the Covenant. Maybe that's why?

Much of your list is north african nations, or larger populations, or oil rich/tourist nations (angola kenya etc.) Ethiopia has a huge a population, but is still extremely poor per capita

Not taking OPs side or anything but GDP per capita isn't the only thing that matters.. or even is the most important.

fpbp

The chart's pretty misleading. Ethiopia has a huge population, so of course it's going to have a fairly high GDP (relative to the rest of Africa). But per capita, it's not so good. The GDP per capita of Ethiopia is half that of Kenya and really only started to recover from its post-civil-war slump in about the middle of the last decade.

But Ethiopia's problems seem to stem from endemic warfare ravaging the region and the Ethiopian revolution. Ethiopia did seem like it had a decent shot at success after WW2, with Haile Selassie pretty actively trying to modernize the country (although his attempts would ultimately provide the ideological foundations for the coup that ousted him). But the Derg took over in 1974, began purging old feudal elites, and, after it lost the support of the US, it turned communist to gain Soviet support. Already having to deal with insurgents in Eritrea since 1962, the purges that followed the Derg's rise to power and subsequent power struggles that would put Mengistu at the helm would see rebel groups pop up in Tigray, Afar, and Oromia. Plus, you had the Somalis actively sponsoring rebels in the east and even invading in 1977.

Ethiopia ended up being an army with a state. Most of society was militarized, and policies meant to fight insurgents like villigization ended up ruining local economies as the government lacked the funds to support the villages they created. Instead, money went to the military - the budget was something like 25% of the GDP, and military service was the only realistic occupation for most of the population. Scorched-earth tactics further ruined the economy across most of the country, and with how devastating the war was, it's a surprise that the national GDP only stagnated rather than collapsing.

Current growth is thanks to Ethiopia being in such a bad position to start with and the (relative) stability brought on by the current government.

Doesn't help when there's so much ethnic conflict in the region. Fucking Oromo shitters. Otherwise, it's true, Ethiopia has one of the biggest economies in the continent.

Assistance from other powers because Ethiopia us the "chosen(s)" one if that region (America picks one nation in a region for that).

Ethiopia has the benefit if starting from scratch vs colonized nations which are more restricted to various degrees based on how heavily colonized they are.

Like compare the massive wealth disparity in the African settler/semi settler colonies and the "peasant" colonies.
