You would have been a pleb or a slave

Rome was pretty much shithole place to live in. Rich people lived in suburbs. Meanwhile poor people lived in really cramped apartments. It would be nice if you could live in suburbs thou.

thats too bad. the architecture is pretty neat

Yeah it is pretty great. I really like aqueducts for some reason.

You know this is just a guess right? It probably was not this neat looking

it looked 100% better. Read Virgil

Imagine the stench. Over a million people mostly crammed into filthy insulae without any modern medicine, sanitation, waste disposal. Yes they had baths and sewers but a population density as high as Rome would have resulted in some pretty disgusting conditions.

Here's the oldest photograph of Rome, IIRC from 1860 and looking way better than what we have today.

Rome is still an amazing looking City, I stayed on the Aventine last year, it's amazing how it still feels like almost a suburb in the middle of a city

Via Appia is still a pretty nice retreat too

Generally people either throw their shit out of window. Good thing you could sue them for ``hospital fees`` and missing work days if it hits drops on you. Because of night traffic you couldn`t even sleep. But at least they had pretty great sanitation system.

Did you start a gang war that threatened to engulf the entire city

did rome was like that?
buildings so close

go back farther

This isn't Rome, but it was a Roman colony. Rome itself would have been much more disorderly.

Wide streets were invented for cars.

>implying you aren't either one today

what is the name of that roman colony?

Thats how southern european cities look anyway, but without all the criminals and diseases.

yeah its interesting. Rome itself isnt a "roman" city based on their own rules of making cities.

this is pretty cool

Constantinople was unironically better

Well Connie was a planned city, at least in the beginning, as it grew things became almost as chaotic as Rome. But I imagine that was all it had going for it and that if we were transported to any ancient city, be it Connie or Rome, we wouldn't see anything like these pictures but rather filthy streets, walls covered in graffiti, all looking very third world despite the magnificent buildings.

wow sounds awful, glad we live in our advanced utopian society today

this is supposedly a most accurate recreation of ancient Rome using archeological evidence, historical records and an analysis of the modern city's layout, and they've turned it into a 3rd century crisis MMO

Sacked by Vandals, sacked by Berbers, sacked by Arabs, and eventually buried by the Sahara. Definitely a nice place to live.
