What about Lincoln? I know it's not a hipster choice but he strikes me as quite philosophical and intellectual, had a great background story, and his expansion of federal power kinda set the tone for the next century's presidencies.

wilson did that more i think. dude laid the foundation for america to emerge as a global power, even if americans dicked around for the next three decades before acting on it.

Honestly I think Wilson is just a failed version of FDR.

Europe made us a world power in 1916 when it was already on its knees begging to be put out of it's misery. Wilson had little to do with that.
