Austria-Hungary, Imperial Germany and Imperial Russia have without a doubt the most aesthetic borders in human history.

1) They had significant political and cultural autonomy, could use their own language in education and administration, had their own assembly (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diet_of_Galicia_and_Lodomeria) and so on.

2) The "problematic Slavs" issue was mostly because Hungarians were left in charge with many of them (which the Poles weren't) and because of Russian-inspired pan-Slavism (which the Poles were hostile to).

3) They were (or their elites anyway) a society of Catholic landowners which fit right in with AH elites, many Poles made careers in the Austrian administration, they were ministers and so on.

The irony was that while Franz was rough around the edges. He did not believe the Empire could get any bigger. And more importantly it needed political reform badly to survive the 20th and 21st century. But with his death nothing came of it as the war was later declared. Dooming the Empire & Kingdom.

That said, he had the right idea in my opinion, concerning the federalization of the empire. First he only wanted to give power to a third unified slavic state, which was opposed by the hungarians, serbs, and within the court too. He also wanted to take away the special status of hungary. I'm not an expert on this subject, but I suppose the end goal was to have a bunch of equal states within the empire with representation, which, honestly, sounds pretty amazing, even if it would've meant that the hungarians would've lost some priviliges and some clay.
I honestly think that the fully realized and modernized united states of greater austria would've been capable of even winning WW1.
Feels bad that it didn't happen though.

the problem isn't the czechs, the problem is the meme of nation-states. the german minorities in czechia were treated extraordinarily well in czechoslovakia. The republic itself was multicultural and multiethnic and it did very well that way until the nazis partitioned it. Also, as was clear as day in 1919 and in the Czech crisis, Sudetenland has huge strategic and economic value. Without the sudetenland the Czechs lost all of their strategic defenses. This is exactly why when Hilter invaded Czechia in early 1939 after having already gotten the Sudetenland, the Czechs surrendered immediately without a shot fired.
