don't know about the past but nowadays you hear lots of stories about tinkers running scams in Australia or on the continent. They just blame the Irish because they can't tell the difference.

Early modern Europe was conducive to some occupations that could be filled by itinerants. People mostly lived in small rural settlements and didn't need to get their pots repaired or knives sharpened or listen to semi-pro music or get their fortune told every single day. So some groups started travelling around to provide such services.
Itinerants who see any individual community only once every few years are in a perfect position to commit petty crimes, so some of them started to do that.
As cities got bigger and transportation got better, the need for itinerant occupations decreased.
There were originally itinerants everywhere, and only the Romani were ethnically-based. Eventually most itinerant communities became subsumed into a Romani identity. The Irish Travellers were just in a place that was relatively isolated from the Romani.

or the other way around, people that caused problems would join some itinerant group to survive and avoid trouble, then they had to figure out what to do so they would play music for money or sharpen knives or trade in horses or whatever you can still get to do to earn a few coins

Toxic 'culture' based around fightin, robbing fellas and general hooliganism. Some of them are genial enough after a certain age but the vast majority are trouble and only bring the dirty looks and mistrust upon themselves.
There's a popular myth that they are descendants of people evicted off their small farms during the famine and hence leading to the travelling but it's been disproved somewhat.

Irish Travellers descend from 2 main roots, tinker and travelling farm workers(mostly big groups of seasonal hop and orchard workers, and the navvies from the 18/19th century who would be in gangs of up to 5000 living in tent cities alongside the canals as they were built, same for the rural railways and tunnels.

Romani are the ancient ones here having been around since medieval times, they dont mix with the irish afaik. There are also diidicoys (diddlos) and pikeys, both of which are from familes mixed with outsiders from the romani usually. there are also Kale in Wales who are similar to the romani, and the old hippy travellers left from the 60s(very few now) plus the new generation of crusties (hippies form the 90s).
