How is he wrong?

Every conclusion is logically invalid.

Ex: Not warriors because they learned non-war related things and had leisure time.

Another one.

Claim: Sparta was a great warrior society.
This guy: Sparta may have been undefeated in pitched battles for 150 years, but they were average in skirmishes! Also, they weren't an aggressive force most of the time.
Verdict: MYTH. SPARTA WAS NOT A GREAT WARRIOR SOCIETY.

???

They did things better than other Greeks but it wasn't a warrior society. He explains that Spartan society was more or less the same as other Greek oligarchies. The Spartans were a leisure class, not a warrior class nor a militarized society. And they not only lost skirmishes but also sieges and naval engagements but pitched battles are not enough to win a war. Plus it doesn't hurt your chances when your neighbors take pride in being ill-prepared for warfare.

He never ever claims that. There's plenty of praises in that video, it just seeks to tear down the "Spartan mirage". It's taking a critical look at Sparta without all the memes.

>invicta takes the help of an academic and does a livestream to answer his videos.
>some shitter shattered memer gets his ass bent because his halo idols were a meme class.

He also did a AMA on r/askhistorians
Lots of interesting info there t b h

>rome 2 is the closest to actual hoplite fighting
Man, the entirety of TWCenter now has an existential crisis

No, because he takes a critical look, comes up with facts, and then proceeds to make equally stupid claims as the one he is debunking.

He says that they weren't a military society. They were. Just because the Spartiates were a leisurely class in non-war times does not mean that they weren't warriors, nor does it mean the society wasn't focused around combat.

The meme of Spartan ubermensch soldiers is retarded. They were, however, a very moderate and militarized society. To claim otherwise is to be disingenuous

boetian detected

haha xd

>most of their training is unrelated to military including dancing and singing
>army kept home to bully helots.
He specifically mentions that they had an officer corp down to a much lower level, had dedicated officers for logistics and training, something that other greek states didn't regularly have. What he says is that the entirety of the spartan training was not about fighting like a bunch of orcs.

Jesus, even through reading basic Ancient Greek philosophy and literature I find countless examples of people saying that soldiers ought to be trained in gymnastic, music, dance, etc. He makes the claim that Spartiates were not bred for war/battle (trained to be warriors). They were.

well yeah the popular depiction is that hoplites drilled to perfection but the rome 2 engine just shows the front line relatively dispersed in comparison.

The new empires divided dlc is ripping of DEI by giving hopiltes the ability to shove tho which is cool

>Sparta played a minor role in the first persian war
Is showing up after the battle is over a role at all?

kek

How, per chance, where they focused on combat? IIRC their up bringing and education didn't have any martial thoughts behind it, it was more akin making them good citizens. It's just that having discipline also helps in battle.

Maybe this will help with clarification. It's a Q and A with an expert in the field by the same guy:

Text or Vod (maybe both?) the choice is yours user!

>they were bred for war/battle
what part of the agoge training around the time of the persian invasion was specifically about making supersoldiers?

Didn't say supersoldiers. Just good soldiers.

glory to thebes

>super soldiers
>Lost to an army of homosexuals
Some super soldiers they are

Hey, its difficult to fight against an enemy who spends their free time being penetrated when your main weapon is a spear.
