America was left as the only major economy untouched by world war 2, leading too a boom in exports to Europe in its rebuilding effort. The whole idea of the 50s being a perfect time was a facade and unsustainable. The massive shortcomings of the society were exposed in the counter culture of the 60s.

Of course we sat for dinner on thanksgiving and christmas. It is implied that this picture perfect family was the norm in the 50s and standards have lapsed. I would argue not so, dad has dropped the spook that things have to be a certain way or he is a failure. The more casual modern family is better.

If you're talking about higher divorce rates, the underlying causes were still there in the 50s, separations were just more socially stigmatized and difficult financially.
