personally, pull ups don't work my mid back enough. rhomboids and rear delts get hit the best when I row.

I've been lifting 5 years and havent done a single set of pulldowns since the first 6 months of lifting.

Squat
Bench
Row
Chin
OHP
This covers almost every single muscle in the body with a good bit of overlap

More accurately, the important thing for drug-free lifters (in most cases) is to have a major exercise from each of the big movement categories that the can safely load and progress on. Whether they're doing chins vs pullups or OHP vs push press or whatever doesn't have a great deal of influence on the outcome.
