Try working your core? I went through the same and im just noticing the changes after starting to implement more core workouts.

Hanging leg raises really hit lower abs for me. Floor or decline crunches for upper abs.

Sorry if this sounds retarded but I was under the impression that doing compound free weight exercises worked the abs enough that it isn't necessary to do additional ab work. Is this information false??

But OP asked how to work abs DIRECTLY and front squats certainly isnt the best way. Also leg raises are far superior in terms of ab activation. Yeah front squats or squats in general utilize the abs a lot but there are far better exercises.

Yeah it works abs "enough" but if you want a really strong core you're gonna have to do isolation. Having strong abs and spinal erectors will also help prevent injury in squats and deadlifts in the long run. You'd have to be an idiot to not do any direct core work.

I guy at an MMA gym I used to go to would do situps holding a 20kg plate with arms extended, like start in a bench sort of position and end in an OHP sort of position. No idea if it's legit or not but I tried it once and it was pretty difficult
