Why are people so autistic about GMOs? Not all of them are bad, it's the only way to keep food production sustainable while reasonably feeding people.

Because they don't know what gmos are. They think gmos are like, drugs injected into the food or some shit.
Humans have been genetically modifying food through selective breeding for fun and profit since they figured out what dirt does.

I think it's more that a lot of GMO crops are designed to be resistant to really toxic pesticides so that they can spray shit on them to kill off the bugs without worrying about killing off the plants. I'm for GMOs personally, but I can see why some people out of the millions of irrational fear-mongers might have valid qualms.

It's because we don't have info about long term effects of GMOs on both the environments in which they're introduced and what they do the body.

Fairly early research shows little to no negative impact on their usage as food and as agricultural products, but people are worried that changing the genetic structure of certain plant organisms might introduce biological changes to the animals/people consuming them and that it might change resource consumption over several years.

Personally I think it's blown out of proportion like the nuclear energy scares of the 60's and beyond

Exactly, some companies take GMOs a bit too far, but GMOs can be as simple as selective breeding. I don't see why everything has to be so black and white.
For sure, I'm in full support of GMO use but at the very least they should be labeled, at least to shut the nutjobs and fear-mongers up.

I don't think they're worried about radioactivity as much as they are potentially unforseen traits that come with the alteration (such as retention of ground elements that could impact the growing environment and the things that eat the crop).

Like when I was in Hawaii, there was a pretty big objection to GMO introduction because they were concerned about the insect ecology that would probably eat the plants, which could make a huge impact on a highly diverse floral environment like the islands.

Granted, this kind of shit would almost definitely be tested several times before introduction to the live environment, so it's highly unlikely to be so dramatic, but the scientifically illiterate crowd does tend to carry a loud voice

Actually GMO refers specifically to altering the genome of a crop using modern biotech (i.e. gene splicing using restriction enzymes etc) as opposed to selective breeding or other traditional ways of changing the properties of organisms, but I wholeheartedly agree with your general point
