The Winter War was a formative experience that shaped subsequent Soviet military policy. They also reinstated some 10,000 officers purged at Stalin's behest in the thirties. I never said the Germans would've won if they had invaded in 1939, but if the Soviets hadn't been in the Winter War they would have been less prepared, not to mention that the growing emphasis on producing military goods for the Soviet economy only really got started in 1939.

I aways laugh when I remeber that russia would be a forgotten shithole if they didn't manage to steal american nuclear bomb designs. It says a lot about Stalin's legacy.

There are statements however of Stalin justifying the pact with the expansion of the socialist system on new territories; for him, the destruction of Poland meant "one bourgeois fascist state less". He regarded Hitler as useful for weakening the established imperialst powers.
