can we talk about how fucking stacked greek and renaissance sculptures are? were people that huge or did sculptors just extrapolate based on bodybuilders and their knowledge of anatomy?

A lot of people were pretty huge, a lot of manual labor helped, but people back then were also a lot smaller, which make it easier to gain muscle.
t. experienced king of manlets

Back in the day the levels of test in a male were hundreds of times higher than they are today. Study up on the decline of testosterone in modern society.
This is the era of the numale unfortunately.

kinda
maybe

The original bronze and roman marble copies were based off idealized figures and proportions (polykleitos)

as they advanced further into the arts they started becoming much more idealized and imaginative (think stick figure into comic book heroic proportions)

When you idealize gods and half gods.... you're trying to put into a sculpture the power to awe.

(its not to say western civ never had buff proportionate men)

Even compared to 50 years ago our test levels are a lot lower. I can't imagine how high test levels were back in Greece when all they did was Phalanx, Party, and Philosophy but I'm sure they were ridiculously high compared to now.

Its almost like youre trying your best to be betas

this is a good response, my only concern is that many sculptors' accuracy in their depictions of extremely buff men is extreme. comic book superheroes don't at all have the same sort of anatomical accuracy.

in fact, when we need to depict a superhuman ideal of muscularity right now, we still use real human bodies, not renderings (see greg plitt as dr manhattan). when we try to extrapolate from a real human to a superhuman ideal from our knowledge of anatomy, the best we can do is the engineer from prometheus or arkham asylum batman, neither of which look anywhere near as realistic as many renaissance and classical sculptures; it lands right in the uncanny valley--these sculptures don't.

this makes me think that these sculptors had actual dudes that buff to work with.

differences in physiological, normal testosterone levels don't confer differences in gains. I'll make another post with more info and sources

...

how many people across the ages do you think have actually had these kinds of bodies without modern drugs/ equipment and knowledge etc.

less than 10,000? more? less?

and how many do you think have the potential but never the opportunity, knowledge or upbringing?

Sorry, hopefully this is better quality

Let's do that, but the Hercules wrestling Cerberus sculpture is by Antonin Wagner (1834-1895) and has nothing to do with either

>funfact: a large penis was esteemed pleb even vulgar and a sign of lower class back then

thats why they all have those tiny peckers.

>yfw dicklets were all the rage back then

don't compare that pajeet to europeans

phantastic thread.

statues have always been more motivating than all the goal body threads

You guys bitch about fridge mode, but fucking look at that guy.

this is what he looked like before hgh

>don't talk to me or my son ever again

nice bait.

>implying sculpting bronze statue is as easy as sculpting marble one

thats bullshit, average test levels have been plummeting in the west because of the lack of menial labour, less sexual activity because of being fat therefore lazy and low test and other factors, but greeks were still human, they would at best have a more testosterone society (altough greece wasnt even a thing back then so sparta vs megaria would be more of a thing in that regard) which means higher average levels. Nowadays there are still high test males and theyre not hindered by lazy fat ass betas and neckbeards

I mean those bodies are obviously not achievable natty but thats because theyre not bodies but even more stylized perfectly chiseled statues of those boies, muscular definition was something that guy was obviously worried about but his upper body couldnt have ever been this big, no way, it doesnt matter how high test you are

what I meant to say is that the sculptor payed close attention to the muscular definition and enhanced it a lot while retaining a big guy look at the same time

>heard u were talkin shit

would you have the balls to fight 3 rottweilers at the same time, Veeky Forums?

exaggeration: It was just not an important part of their culture.

Raw dominance was more important, hence an emphasis on intelligence, masculinity, wit and domination over other men/or women.

Chances are some of these guys still had dongers.
But their culture took the "my dick length does not define me as a man" to a whole other level.

its just one dog you fucking idiot, the Hellhound Kerberus. Veeky Forums really is the most ignorant board, not even basic greek mythology

European culture
>Cradle of philosophy and virtues pursuing
>Muscular aesthetic body
>No fucks given about dick size

African >culture
>ugabuga we invented stick
>auschwitz prisoner mode bodies
>LOOK AT MUH DICK

>Absolutely no leg mass

If it were based on real people, based on their lifestyles, no fucking way they have amazing pecs but 0 quads, makes no goddamn sense.

Also, my favorite ancient sculpture

Fuck, I'm retarded

Test levels are declining due to hormonal interference, men and boys are getting too much estrogen or substances that mimic it through plastics (bisphenol A), eating meat from animals pumped full of growth hormones, drinking contaminated water etc

Having a big dick wasn't vulgar, but creating a beautiful sculpture only to put such focus on the genitalia would be vulgar. It's the same with the sculptures of women, you don't see any with gigantic J-cup titties and massive asses, do you?

The idea was to represent the absolute height of strength and beauty, not to make classical porn.

this, people overlook this and probably slept through Art History class Monday morning.

Way to make it racist you twat, There is actually loads of credible research on the topic if you ever want to get educated.

It was the fact that they were likely the origin of our species combined with the temperature, geographical location, population spread and type of sustainable supply that led to those differences. Not any inherent genetic superiority.

It was likely Africans who left Africa that led to the heavy progression in the rest of the world

Pic: oldie but good book on the subject.

I dont really care but I saw you posted that piece of anal discharge people call a book, so fuck off.
There is absolutely no excuse for the failure of africa. It is a shit continent full of shit people, they have been given so many chances to improve and they never did.
Also,
>oldie
Seriously, shove a giant metal pipe up your ass. I wouldent even consider plutarch or livy to be "oldies".
And yes, IQ differences show definite genetic superiority, as well as the inability of sub Saharan Africans to utilize any of the gifts Europeans gave them. Its literally just a cluster of failed states, and the only 2 successful ones were destroyed because of faggots like you whining about white people still being in charge.

Hades was not stacked.

call book shit

Uses quote from Darwin that literally support the thesis of the book.

Look at the fucking quote you retard. Attack my argument instead of just shitposting.
And the thesis is bullshit, because it was NOT easy for indigenous peoples of africa and middle america to survive. During some winters, thousands would starve and come to the aztec capital, it became a yearly thing.
In africa, populations remained low, and they remained violent. Its not like everybody was just happy making the africa face playing the bongo, they were living an absolutely shitty life and they had every reason to improve it, but their genetic makeup made them too stupid and violent to change anything.

building on this and clarifying my point;
Africans had access to a massive amount of natural recources, but it was not easy for them to survive. The concept that they just picked fruit off trees and lived happily was BS, they were consistently starving and getting killed by each other and animals. If they DID, however, manage to progress to the slightest semblance of civilization they would have had access to an insane amount of resources and wealth.

Highschool art student here
Didn't learn shit about art at all what a fucking waste of 3 years

But I've heard that they'd study dead bodies and their muscles, tendons and all that and would use it to make sculptures

if it's true? No idea but I highly doubt that there weren't people like those guys
maybe some were enhanced like the hercules one but some are obviously attainable natty
times were different then, good food and exercise was the norm.

>look at this thread
>pure beautiful art
>always loved everything about ancient greece even as a kid
>look outside

looks like you love the duckface

...

If the statue is euro why does it have jew hair?

>what a fucking waste of 3 years
what a surprise

...

expected to study art instead got memed
was the same course as the others except we had descriptive geometry, drawing and arts history

in arts history our teacher was a history only so she only gave... history and nothing about art.
in drawing the teacher would put random shit on the middle of the class and make you draw, no techniques or whatever were taught

Was waiting for this one.

They did study cadavers, it became the norm in art to use the muscle structures found dissecting cadavers because they noticed men who were viewed as strong had some definition and took it to the extreme, there are writings on it by classical artists.

But no, there weren't people like that, these were to them what HGH and steroid bodybuilders are today, freaky and unrealistic. They were meant to portray gods far beyond humans. The only people with a good enough diet for that did no manual labor, and no one knew shit about bodybuilding even up to 200 years ago, most people still know absolute shit about natty bodybuilding now. Old-time(as in like 100 years ago) bodybuilders spent their whole lives studying this and never made it past strong-fat or DYEL.

...

football(soccer) players look pretty good and ripped yet they dont lift(most of them at least don't)
they simply run

I once went through the trouble of measuring a picture of greek statues via photoshop (and compared with measurements we actually know).

They aren't really bodybuilder-type big. Not even close. They also have very weird proportions by modern standards (big waists, thin legs, for example). Can't find the numbers anymore but I remember the Men's Health article on Doryphoros' measurements was more or less legit.

You think Europeans don't have curls?

What are, you, an American or something?

>wat are greeks

>HEIGHT = 6 feet, 5½ INCHES
>NECK = 19 INCHES
>BICEPS = 16½ INCHES
>CHEST = 52 INCHES
>FOREARM = 14½ INCHES
>BUTTOCKS = 47½ INCHES
>CALF = 19 INCHES
>WAIST = 40½ INCHES
>THIGH = 26½ INCHES

It fits, more or less. Calculate down for your own height. Somebody can program a calculator? Enter your height, get out your Doryphoros measurements.

We could also add other statues, if we manage to get their measurements. Make an App out of it. Get rich.
