I never had good results with barbell serratus press, but protracting the scapula while doing either weighted push ups or explosive push ups helps a ton
What really works it for me is to grab a cable, stand sideways to it (think cable in your right hand, right hip towards the cable machine, left hip far away from it)
Then to twist my torso slightly away from the cable, and "punch" my arm out, focusing on protracting the scapula.
This is the only exercise where my serratus fatigues before any other muscles. Also the only exercise i feel like i can get a peak contraction in my serratus
Probably not if all your horizontal pressing is done with a retracted scapula.

Benching without scapular retraction is snap city, but there are plenty of serratus exercises that are safe.
Push ups are great, though.

That being said stomach vacuum + dumbbell pullover = greatest transverse abdominis exercise of all time
