If we ditched that, lowered taxes massively but also ceased any social security payments, not only would the state be better off, so would the people.

I gladly pay high taxes if it means the kind of railway infrastructure and public transportation we have, universal health care, virutally free college/university or trade school. It's a more homogenous society where people care for each other and I'm fine with that, this results in social cohesion and ultimately a better society for everyone.
