Why does marriage exist?

Why does marriage exist?
Who thought it was a good idea and why did it get so popular?

women found a way to get protection for life ...

It leads to a better environment to raise the next generations compared to alternatives.

>Why does marriage exist?
To generate social stability

>Who thought it was a good idea and why did it get so popular?
People who realized harems deprived large sections of the population from feeling satisfied and would cause them to ultimately rebel and overthrow the rich men who could afford large luxurious harems.

marriages are the opposite of envy and the first were made polygamous

But harems existed in pre agricultural societies so its obviously not about wealth in the traditional sense

>
Hunter-gatherers are pretty much all monogamous societies. Early modern humans being polygamous is an obsolete late 19th century theory.

Certainty of paternity. Cutting down on VD.

if males can't get mates they'll band together and destroy their society.

In B4 some retard mentions pseudoscience like Sex at Dawn or some other Jared Diamond-tier garbage.

Marriage is not about the satisfaction of the current generation, but about the welfare of the next one.

>why did it get so popular?
It didn't get popular, that's like saying that evolutionary adaptations "got popular", which is incorrect. It's natural selection. Cultures with marriage were superior and replaced/wiped those that didn't practice it.

Marriage prevents female sexual selection. Due to the existence of biological sex, males and females have different sexual strategies (part of gender). As females have to undergo the lengthy and dangerous 9 month pregnancy to have a single child, their optimal strategy is to choose the most fit male. Males however don't have a limit to how many children they can have per year, so their optimal strategy is to mate with as many females as possible. Female sexual strategy results in harems, leading to male competition where aggression becomes an evolutionary advantage. Marriage, to some extent, makes male violence and aggression less evolutionary favorable as it reduces competition. Civilized males adapted to be weaker and less aggressive, instead developing fraternity, which reinforces civilization and facilitates its progression.

>Why does marriage exist?

It barely does m8.

Men at the top still get harems.

>Civilized males adapted to be weaker and less aggressive, instead developing fraternity, which reinforces civilization and facilitates its progression.
Then why does nearly every known culture practice marriage? Even hunter-gatherer tribesmen in Amazonia who have minimal contact with the outside world have the institution of marriage.

>Why does marriage exist?
Monogamy. An evolutionary strategy, resulting in a female locking down a male for the purpose of nurturing offspring.

You would expect them to. If you believe in evolution by natural selection, then it would seem most of the cultures that don't practice marriage died off, presumably from fraternal violence.

>Why does marriage exist?

Women can't survive on their own

>Who thought it was a good idea and why did it get so popular?

Women unironically, as they benefit the most from it. Women also unironically invented the Patriarchy which to this day remains the most optimal social system.
