Veeky Forums book thread

For whatever reason, I'm in a cold war mood and I have 3 audible credits. I already spent one of them on pic-related. So far, I'm not disappointed, but I'd like some recommendations on other cold war related books.

A few people asked for books about Vietnam in the old thread so I found these on the bottom of Vietnam's wiki page
>K. W. Taylor (2013) - A History of the Vietnamese
>Kiernan, Ben (2017) - Viet Nam: A History from Earliest Times to the Present

I’m about 100 pages into this, and I have to say that I’m glad Mike Duncan is a pretty solid writer. It’s a nice feeling to see someone you’ve followed for a number of years actually rise up and become rather successful.

Next I’m going to be reading my “Landmark Julius Caesar”, then either move onto Livy Books 1-5 or start my Byzantine backlog

Can someone please recommend me any book about medieval russia, kievan rus, republic of novgorod, nevsky or just an overview about it?
Thanks

I might have some. What's in it for me to go look and potentially post them?

Whats this one about anyway?

And can you recommend any podcasts similar to his? I like Mike, but i'm all burned out on Revolutions after going through England, America, France, and 3/4ths of Haiti

...

Is Mein Kampf actually an interesting read?

not really

depends. There's a number of various factors, but if you decide to do it go with the Stalag edition. It was the only official English translation by an English speaking German.

This reminds me, does anyone have a good list for Goebbels?

...

I would really like to learn more about the Crusades beyond the /pol/ memes. Can anyone recommend some books or even better, is there a Veeky Forums book list.

or even betterer a megaupload or torrent?

...

"The Crusades" by Thomas Asbridge. The author does a very good job of staying neutral, simply giving the facts of what happened without casting down judgement or trying to frame one side as being right or wrong. For example, whenever the Christians massacre a town filled with Muslims, the author simply says that it happened and moves on without trying to make it sound like the worst thing that ever happened. Same applies in reverse, when Muslims massacre Christians, he simply says what happened in as much detail as the historical record allows and then moves on without dwelling on it too much. The fact that the author is so firmly committed to being neutral makes certain events much less dramatic than they otherwise could be, but that's probably for the best. If you want a serious, academic book then this is it. Just be aware that the author very clearly puts "here's facts of what happened" above trying to tell a story, which makes some parts a tad dry.

I liked Thomas Asbridge “The Crusades” or Steve Runciman’s Crusade Trilogy.
It’s about the period of 146-78 BC, where you have the Grachii brothers, the wars of Gaius Marius and Sulla, and the general breakdown of the republic before Caesar rolled onto the scene.
If you want a similar style, check out “Fall of Rome”/Tides of History podcast, which are more scholarly less-grand narrative episodes about various causes and issues relating to the fall of the Western Roman Empire. I also recommend the Great Courses lecture series if you can score some free copies, as they’re in 30 minute chunks so perfect for car rides. I recommend any done by Kenneth Harl, especially the Alexander the Great and Macedonian Empire one.

here's the mega that has a lot of books on the crusades

Is Brands any good? I've thought of getting American Colossus because I want a good Gilded Age book but I worry it's going to be a little too pop history.

Can't be any worse than the Gilded Age portion of the Oxford History of the Untied Stated series going to Richard White who writes an 800 page book about how evil America and capitalism are.

A hole is a hole

Janet Martin's Medieval Russia is probably the most comprehensive english language book on the subject. It's on the Veeky Forums mega I think.

What can man do against such degeneracy?

Kind of. I'm very slowly working on a project right now about the Ogaden War because I've found there's pretty much nothing out there that gives the kind of overall look that I want.

Good list of books to avoid right there

If you want a good gilded age work, I strongly recommend the Theodore Rex trilogy and “Devil in the White City”

...

...

>I want a good Gilded Age book

Read "Destiny of the Republic." It's a story of madness, medicine, and the murder of a president.

What do ya'll use to make them?

Martin Gilbert did one. It's dry, but accurate.

I want a book on Prussia

Crescent and The Cross from History Channel is pretty good.

what have you read recently? sell me on it

Anyone read Kursk 1943: A Statistical Analysis by Niklas Zetterling?

Looking into getting it and I just wanted to hear some thoughts about it. As while I hear the content (being a near definitive orbat and organizational summary of German and Soviet power in the region), I've heard the main claim of the book was lacking, or rather was rather extreme and just wanted to hear others thoughts on it.

I love the author (his books on Normandy, Korsun Pocket, and Bismarck were all great). He's imo one of the best on strategic looks of operations, but I can mainly only find this for like a hundred bucks so I'm not sure if I should drop on it yet.

thanks for putting them in a list

Anyone got anything on Celts before Caeser's wars? Specifically Brittonic and Druidic culture, Pytheas based, but anything really.

Any recommendations on the Sengoku period?
Thanks.

what you did is good

Barry cunliffe's Ancient Celts covers thing.

That's not me.

Good book on the Comanche.

The last two look interesting, thanks!

So is this actually worth going through? Or is it just the medieval equivalent of torture porn? I read Dan Brown's "Inferno" recently, an adventure novel in which Dante's Divine Comedy is a recurring plot point, mostly because the primary antagonist is utterly obsessed with it. The book successfully triggered my curiosity about reading the actual thing. Should I do it?

Yeah. Get the everyman’s library or the Norton Critical edition. It’s probably the most important medieval work of literature until Shakespeare.

I've got Peskin's bio which is fantastic. I'm really surprised there doesn't seem to be a good James G. Blaine bio though considering what a towering figure he was during his time.

Also modern Italian as a language is literally based on Dante's work.

I want to read a general history of Scotland. The mega has Jenny Wormald's book, is that the best one?

Beevor's Fall of Berlin was very dry.

>Beevor's story of the final collapse of Nazi Germany is not great historical writing. The narrative reads as a catalogue of events without the binding literary thread necessary to weave a compelling historical tale. There is little development of the historical figures -- their stories are not fleshed out. You end the book knowing not much more about Zhukov, Guderian, Chiukov or Weidling than when you started. "The Fall of Berlin 1945" is weak alongside John Toland's "The Last 100 Days" despite greater access to German and former Soviet archival material.

What are some good books that cover Stalingrad and Berlin?

Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to revisit the subject. From what I've read on Amazon, it's Beevor's Berlin book that stands out as a boring addition to his works. In time I will be checking out his Stalingrad book.

the first section of pic related has stuff
also for more modern history his t.m devine's the scottish nation 1700-2000 might interest you

What's a good book to read if I wish to learn about communism and forms of it?
