I love the old war epics like The Longest Day and A Bridge Too Far, is there any reason why movies like this don't get made anymore? Like epic war movies that show all sides of the conflict and try to be historically accurate

The only film industries which do that much, anymore, are those within China, Japan, and Korea. Usually, it is about their own countries' histories, yet they tend to do historical dramas very well.

name a few please

Korean historical movies are corny af
t. an actual gook

Whig propoganda

Patton.

Not just great as a historical biopic, but just excellent film in general. Great music, great cinematography, George S. Scott gave one of the best performances of all time.

Does anybody watched this one?

>tfw the superior TV version will never get released officially

At least we have shitty, 2nd generation VHS bootlegs...

great film desu

Yes.

Master & commander.

Most of the troops were actually english and they fight in the wrong location but this movie is still possibly the ultimate redcoatporn. And zuluporn. Mangosuthu Buthelezi approved.

watched this a while ago and was actually surprised at how accurate it was.

This one is good. Somewhat dated

They should make a movie about that one battle where they got BTFO by spearchuckers.

If you haven't watched this quit talkin to me

>What is Zulu Dawn

Never heard.

It just isn't as good.

What's wrong with it?

Not him but it has a long LONG buildup. The last 30 minutes are so are pure war kino but everything else is just talking heads. Boring as fuck dialogue and little characterization to speak of. If you're a real Veeky Forumstory guy you might appreciate learning what led to the massive failure at Rourke's Drift but if not just skip to the end.

Is it good? I'm kind of curious about watching it but I'm very intimidated by the length and that it's a silent movie.

...

So good. I wish they hadn't decided not to make sequels. Guess I'll have to rewatch the Hornblower series again in order to get my shipfix.

Ran is great. I never see it mentioned in these threads. Kurosawa Samurai films are awesome in general.

Also Ben Hur.

Should I watch the old one? The remake was terribly boring

Always watch the old one!

Will you forgive me if I pirate it?

I never watched the remake. (Hollywood remakes usually suck). If you can appreciate visually well crafted movies and dont have the attention span of a fish, its probably worth to watch the original.

Ok I’ll watch it as soon as possible!

...I forgive thee.

Is King of Kings (1961) Veeky Forums approved?

Kino

Tora! Tora! Tora! is a fine work. It holds up well as a documentary, even though it was done just a few decades after the PH raid, before most of the classified archives had been revealed. The Japanese did 1/2 the movie, and the Americans the other 1/2, presenting an interesting dichotomy and tonal fabric. Watch for the scene with an aircraft spinning out of control on the runway and slamming into a group of aircraft and exploding into flames, with the ground crewmen running for their lives, which they actually were doing. That scene wasn't scripted. That plane went out of control during filming, and those guys you see scurrying away were truly running for their lives.

First movie I saw as a kid where the English speakers lost.

Yes. Everyone involved with making it is dead so there's no reason to pay money (unless you like to have the Bluray on your shelf).

...

yes it is
I was there and I can confirm it's very accurate

Is there any more Conquistador kino?

It's like Apocalypse Now except several magnitudes less gay and American.

I can't appreciate this movie, because I saw Dr. Strangelove first.
Everything George S. Scott does I saw through that lens of satirical disingenuousness.
It's a shame, because everyone else tells me its a great and authentic movie, but I just can't see it that way.
If I didn't love Kubrick so much, I might hold a grudge against him for this.

>tfw when there'll never be a battle of maiwand picture - not even a bad one. the last stand at the colours, 'ghazis - thousands of 'em!', bobby the dog...

This movie was not what I was expecting, I was baffled by it.
It starts like an adventure, but just becomes something absolutely intimate and horrifying and surreal and gritty all at once. It's so dreamlike and brutal at the same time.
I think I need to watch again to unpack it, because right now it's a total enigma to me, but I just know there's something in it calling me.

fucking love this movie. well shot, well acted, and the feeling of loss and devastation it projects is convincing beyond measure

Based Herzog is based

Maybe this will cure you

What are some good Veeky Forums movies that aren't war movies?

Birth of Nation (the original)

Fun fact

The actor bottom left played a german captain in my favorite movie of all time, Cross of Iron.

Ironic how in Cross of Iron he wants the iron cross while ABTF he has the two iron crosses classes and a knights one.

...

Stumbled across Ran the other night. Great movie

If you're interested in those, pic related is by far THE best movie set during/about the revolution. It captures the dread of not knowing how the revolution could turn on you. Kubrick said it was one of his favorites

This upset them, not suppose to happen. Good movie but utterly demoralizing. Keep a photo of Michel Caine handy.

Patrician

Fuck yeah dude

...

...

Excellent movie. That Robespierre is perfect

Pure kino. Can be good his to cover a historical mindset, and the madness the conquistadors must have felt comes in whiffs here

The Last Valley

Only 30 Years War movie I know of, shame there isn't more focus on the war itself.

Flesh+Blood is somewhat similar I suppose

It didn't happen that long ago and people need to realize what communism in practice is like especially as there are pretty much communist movements in all western societies now.

There is one in every thread.

Noice
Love european movies on european history.

I was not expecting to feel watching japs movies.

Isn't this the one with Noel Fielding playing Napoleon?

It's like Schindler's List, but shorter and somehow comical. That's the only way I can seriously describe it. Fairly accurate to what actually happened too.

This one was fun
