He says that hes doing mostly isolation machines and he wanted to try deadlifts after i told him im doing them.

Result ? He cant lift 120 kg diddly for 5 reps because his grip strength is so shit, meanwhile me DYEL 6 2 masterrace, does that no problem

you can make gains perfectly fine with machines. Id argue you get even faster gains from them. the problem is carry over. machines have almost no carry over to free weights. so you can do machines for years and your free weight lifts will still be shit. also theres nothing stopping you from doing compound machines

but you are absolutely correct. best result you will get when you use everything at your disposal, be it free weights or machines

Just do both. Machines are better in the beginning just to build a foundation without as much risk for breaks/snaps/pulls, once you've built a decent foundation and exited dyel mode you start mixing the barbells and dumbells into your routines. That's what worked very well for me, anyhow. And yes, at first my freeweight lifts were embarassing for someone of my size and strength on machines, but that carryover effect soon kicks in once you gain some stabilizer muscle strength from the barbs and dumbs.
