Name a better emperor

Name a better emperor

Wasn't his obssesion to create powerful absolute monarchy, and his blindness to see in how bad condition is his country caused masive famines in ethiopia?

it was even worse than that.

He wanted to create an absolutist state that he was in no condition to run. At the same time, he was creating liberal western universities and sending officers abroad to the West for education. To the surprise of literally nobody but him, this caused a wave of liberal sentiment that understandably wasn't too happy about an incompetent totalitarian ruler.

And worst of all, despite having a failed coup to warn him that he'd set himself up for failure, he merely buckled down and stuck his head in the sand for another 14 years until the Communists took over.

Menelik II did most of the ground work, Haile Selassie gets all the glory

>Getting btfo by Italy
>Almost losing the country because of Perfidious Albion
>Only keep it because an onion eating christian Zionist with cerebral malaria starts writing letters to MPs
>Getting btfo by commies
>Glory

ahem

The last competent Brazilian ruler.

He took the conditions of his country as god given. Famines have always happened. Why was he supposed to change anything about it.
He wanted to modernize the country, that's why he sent students abroad. Again the monarchy is deeply rooted in his understanding of the world. Ethiopia had been ruled by his line for aeons. How would anything change that. Revolutionaries were just uppity kids to HIM
Menelik did the groundwork militarily and expansionwise, yes. The interior politics and modernization is completely Selassie's work.

He ruled too long. That's the one thing he can be accused of. Well meaning highliy competent man who was in his prime before Italy attacked and was way past it when the world had radically changed after WW2

>Name a better emperor

One of my favourite historical figures

>Ethiopia had been ruled by his line for aeons
nigger what. Ethiopia's modern history has so many usurpers of the throne that it makes the Byzantines seem like the most stable system in history. Claims of descent from the ancient Jewish kingdom were just your standard fabrications to create legitimacy - literally every Ethiopian emperor did it.

>well meaning
He was only interested in personal glory and power. Look at his behavior post WW2. He was pushing hard for a total annexation of Somalia while every major power save the US was trying to go the opposite route and give Somali-dominated Ogaden to the new Somali state, never once considering that the Somalis didn't want to be a part of Ethiopia. And he's pretty much single-handedly responsible for the secessionist war in Eritrea thanks to his pants-on-head retarded to go back on the treaties that allowed him to annex the territory in the first place. He eliminated the agreed upon local democratic government in Eritrea and went out of his way to suppress any culture that wasn't Amharic, despite Amharics being a minority in the country.

>Claims of descent from the ancient Jewish kingdom were just your standard fabrications to create legitimacy - literally every Ethiopian emperor did it.
Exactly. He couldn't just leave that behind.

How is not freely giving away a part of your realm being
>only interested in glory and power
?
Apparently you'd expect him to not make politics of his own and let his country be buttfucked by everyone else like everyone else.

US puppet who got BTFO'd

Feel like pure shit, just want the Tsardom back

>ignoring literally all of my points to argue against something I never said
My point bringing up Ogaden was that the the legitimacy of Ethiopia's hold on Ogaden was already tenuous in the eyes of the international community, and yet Selaissie was clearly intent on extending his hold over the entire Horn of Africa, regardless of any political realities.

His attempt to homogenize the country around a minority culture was stupid enough to make French Canadians seem like sane, rational people. Agreeing to annex Eritrea as an autonomous democratic region only to renege on the region's special status years later allowed for the creation of the perfect storm of nationalist and democratic sentiment that would ruin Ethiopia. And along similar lines, his attempts to modernize the country with western education without recognizing that such attempts *will* spread democratic (or at the very least anti-monarchist) sentiment were hilariously naive.

And with all his fuck ups, he even nearly a decade and a half of warning that things were going bad thanks to the failed 1960s coup. But instead he just stuck his head in the sand and acted like nothing was wrong. Selaissie couldn't play politics well at all - all he managed to do was turn his country into a powderkeg that exploded into one of the worst failed states of Cold War Africa.

What could have been.
What could have been avoided.

Fuck cancer.
