After the Kaiser abandoned the throne, two republics were claimed, a democratic and parliamentary one by Friedrich Ebert, and a communist one by Karl Liebknecht.
Most Germans supported the former. The communists however took power in some areas, for example in Munich.
Officers of the former Imperial army formed new military units consisting of veterans and volunteers to combat the communists and defeated them in 1918-19.
Parts of the Freikorps also fought in Eastern European civil wars on the side of pro-German or anti-communist parties.

Both the communists and the Freikorps wanted to destroy the state and transform German society. The Freikorps eventually succeeded, slaughtering millions and effectively destroying Germany.

We aren't sure what would have happened if the communists won. Worst possible outcome is that Liebknecht or Thålmann is a Stalin tier autocrat. I think it's more likely that they would have been a somewhat more democratic worker's state, because it was a much more developed capitalist economy with a far stronger liberal tradition than in Russia.

Fascism was not an element of the Kapp Putsch, any attempt to portray it as such is absurd revisionism. It was undertaken by conservatives who varied considerably in political ideology.

I had a relative which fought in the Freikorps Epp. Before the war he was a simple farm helper who had next to nothing. He said when they came home from the front after years of fighting for the fatherland, they though people would cheer them for their fight. When they arrived armed commies spit at them, ripped of their medals and beat their officers. To him that was the point where it became clear you had to fight off the commie scum, so he joined a Freikorps and helped liberating Bavaria from the Marxists. All in all the Freikorps where a united front of nationalist and anti-marxist ex-soldiers who didnt want to see their fatherland beeing destroyed by marxist and republican scum.
