I think the USSR broke leftism in the West. Theoretically it didn't have to be the face of radical socialism, but people love a winner and so it did. To be a leftist you inevitably ended up comparing things to the Soviet Union. When it started to became clear it was kind of a shithole compared to western capitalist nations around the late 60s, certain leftist's minds started to break under the pressure. This is (partly) the rise of postmodernism. Others took a hard turn to the cultural sphere. The thing about the cultural political sphere was that they, at the time, seemed much more hopeful without the baggage of the USSR. Women's rights and civil rights were making genuine radical social progress, while "the Revolution" was ever more a joke.

After the 70s the hippies won out over the trotskyists and formed a detente with the capitalist right to dump political socialism for more feminism, civil rights, and light welfare.

The thing is now, I think, people want and need socialist economic critique of capitalism more than ever. But the Boomer and X sellouts have raised an entire generation fearing that stuff. Feminism (and etc.) initially seemed to be a stupendous success at first, but over time cracks in the movement are starting to show. People actually thought LBJ's Great Society was going to cure much of poverty. That women entering the workplace would answer the Feminine Mystique's question "Is this all?". Now?

The thought leaders of the left can't admit things aren't going according to plan because what else do they have to jump to? They have to double, then triple down. Like a desperate gambler, the plays are getting more erratic as a sense of doom sets in.

I think the real thing is that marxism and communism and anarchism are all very specific to europe in the mid to late 1800s and industrial shit work then. But work has changed, so by the post WW1 period, it was just stupid and weird to hamper on about problems in factories that had mostly gone away then. And the only way they could really survive as a movement is to expand on that need to "liberate the oppressed" Marxism is basically like MTV.

But the doom is that they don't know how to progress society (because things aren't great) and they're running out of options. Having no coherent mission. At first food stamps, public housing, and affirmative action were going to help alleviate black American poverty and social ills. Then cultural sensitivity in media. Now... uh? More extreme cultural sensitivity and BLM? I don't think even liberals believe it in their heart of hearts.

Seems to me that a lot of the problem can be traced back to a lack of job opportunities for low to average skilled workers. Unemployment and the dysfunction that flows from it can very quickly lead to cultural and societal rot.

That's very much a Marxist concept though, historical materialism. That history has a course set in stone and those who oppose this change are on the wrong side because the change will happen no matter what.

A bunch of pseudo communist western intellectuals came up with some shitty ideology because they thought classical marxism wasnt applicable to western society. They pretty much dropped the economic side of things (because living standards in the west were good) and instead concentrated on the cultural and political circumstances of the west, both things they perceived as oppressive. They routinely critiqued the eastern bloc too. During the hippie movement a lot of students looked towards them for ideological guidance, so now the modern western left is basically full of these people who think bourgeois liberalism is the way forward.(lots of ex hippie types)

Oh and some of the founders of this new marxism (frankfurt school) worked for the OSS and after WW2 for the CIA. Basically they are a CIA plot, okay.

I think one of the most notable differences between the left and right establishment in America is that the left has always been much more amorphous, especially since the 90s or so when conservatives started unifying themselves around talking points and media strategy organized by key spokesmen and think tanks. (Of course, now the right is struggling with tea-partiers/alt-rightists who are in open revolt to this system and want to go the leaderless-resistance route by focusing on the issues that galvanize individuals rather than fill out bipartisan presidential talking points, just like the left has done to one extent or another for decades.)

The left can't have a coherent mission because it's not a coherent makeup, they co-opted the oppressed segments of society with which America was (or still is) full of. Eastern Europe had worker's poverty, plain and simple. The reason they're struggling is because they want uniformity, they want a general rising of the tides for every group, but outside moderates don't see every group as allies.

I keep hearing liberals lately quoting MLK about how "white moderates are more dangerous than extremist hate groups", and they're right, but they don't realize the reason they're the biggest threat is that they're also the biggest ally. People need to be gradually co-opted; but society in general now is far more polarized than ever. And I think the reason for THAT ties back into hyper-competitive American capitalism making it the optimum solution.
