The Barbarity of Nationalism

Nationalism probably killed way more people than before, with the sole exception of some Chinese conflicts. It killed more than when Europe were just the affairs of the aristocratic elites in the West. Neither did it arise from the Enlightenment, as it had risen from some braindead Romanticism and the early modern equivalent of wewuzism that is called primordialism. Yet, it just took advantage of the state apparatus the Enlightenment had produced, except without the dictum of Reason behind it. Nationalism substitutes Reason with the mystifying notion of Authentic Culture and fleeting feelings towards the vagueness of it, that is susceptible to change according to whatever whims of their fanatic poets (among other factors).

How did then Europe, at the heights of its civilization, produce such barbarity? Where erroneous customs are sometimes even fetishized and celebrated, despite being fundamentally irrational?

Good post

>more population density
>more deaths in conflics
Look what the thirty year war did. None of the world was compares to the sheer amount of dying in the supply viscinity of armies per capita.

Nationalism was invented by Napoleon.

In what sense?

In every sense.

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say the French Revolution created Nationalism, and Napolean's successes permeanently solidified Nationalism as a sociological fuxture in Europe for the next Century?

Was it nationalism OR imperialism that plunge Europe into a state of total destruction?

The fuck are you on about, nationalism killed a couple of million at most in the past two centuries, and that's being generous
Compare that to socialism which has killed over 180 million in the last century alone

>The "socialist" regimens weren't nationalistic.

>nationalism
You mean human nature, its human nature for a massive tribe to form a state that serves only their purpose. Globalism is nothing more planetary nationalism you fucking shill.

>Le human nature argument

Neither, it was capitalism and communism.

Most ethnic-based states only emerged in the 19th century.

Every fucking country in history was an ethnic state formed by an immense tribe.

No.

I'd like to point you to Austria Hungary in the past and almost every nation in the American continent now.

The only nationalistic socialist regime was Nazi Germany, and even they didn't kill that many people with the exception of the war of self-defense against Russia

aka their common denominator: materialism

>Have natural in-group preference
>build society around in-group preference
Why is this wrong?

Who is the flag bearer for great Britain supposed to be? I see him in a lot of anti british propaganda posters.

John Bull

Because you can't conquer other peoples without opressing/genociding/secondclassing them like you could in feudal times.

In a world without wars there would be nothing wrong with nationalism, but we don't live in such a world.

>Nazi germany
>Socialist
