Stoicism

I want to get into stoicism, but where do I start? Any books do you recommend?

believe in science

Is first step.
Read meditations for a general idea, if you like it, some Epictetus.

the only way to know if the "studies" you see with conflicting information is to try them yourself- similar to religion with conflicting ideologies and spiritual practices.

pare down to the minimum in regard to spirituality- there is no death, no god.

why do you fags keep making these shitty stoicism threads

thats not very stoic of you user

Seneca the younger

Senecas letters are pretty gud. But it doesn't matter where you start really. There isn't much literature in the stoic school so if you are really interested in it you'll get through all of it relatively quickly. I started with meditations and enjoyed it immensely. So you can give it a try and if you like it some other authors you can check out would be Epictetus, and Cicero (even though he was more of an eclectic he has a lot of stuff written on stoics).

this stoic lecture playlist is made by a pretty great professor who basically gives philosophy courses online. Check it out as well if you like to listen to something as you do things on the side

user, this is a thread for rational stoics. pls go post elsewhere.

There's already a subreddit for discussing stoicism, though. A thread here isn't really necessary.

im posting relevant to the thread :)
at the same time confronting detractors, who are no doubt posting through ignorance of their own state, as if i needed to explain that.

nothing irrational about it.

why is reddit a part of this converation. if op wanted to post on reddit he wouldve posted on reddit.

i suppose what is really going on are lower-state people interested in society, who are seeking to gain knowledge and emotional attention from those who see themselves as stoic, who are likely more professional and have more to offer than those who are negative (detractors).

society and those who fall into it are a plague among men.

it would serve you well op, that when you engage with a perosn, even anonymously, that you think deeply of their intention, for it could simply be to get a reaction from you.

as a stoic, these are your "enemies" so to speak. they are usually homosexual.

Fuck you he's not a stoic. Neither am I.

Epic stoicism.

Start by changing the OP image to Zeno of Citium

I like Seneca's "Of a Happy Life" as an introduction.
"Of Providence" is good too.

But the best book is obviously the Discourses of Epictetus (maybe after reading those two?)

Aurelius, The Mediations
Seneca - Letters from a stoic, essays
Epictetus - Discourses, Handbook
Cicero - On ends, On Duty, On Aging, Stoic Paradoxes, On Divination, Dialogues that present Stoic and other viewpoints.

Most of our sources are later Roman ones, and not that many.

It's the hot new meme philosophy that Nu males are jumping on .

Can I still be a stoic even if I can't grow a proper beard?

you can grow a proper beard.
get your t up- this will help your practice as well

>Can I still be a stoic even if I can't grow a proper beard?

Beards are for philosophers. Are you a philosopher?

>meditations for a general idea
yikes

Cicero

Start with the Greeks

I doubt this.
Why would liberal, sensitive guys be interested in Stoicism?

I'm sensitive and liberal and I like stoic thought

the meditations are like stoicism lite.
you can read em in no time and get a little taste of the vast world beyond.
don't take em too seriously

read Plato instead
