Hedonism = Truth?

what is actually wrong with hedonism as a philosophy of what makes life worth living?

If you give a mouse a cookie, it'll probably ask for a cup of milk :^)

People are generally not fulfilled by self indulgence.

Depression being such a problem is likely linked to more hedonist lifestyles being lived.

Hedonism is truth taken to the nth degree, so no

there's a difference between pure self-indulgence and a philosophy that says what ultimately matters is feeling good so the point is to feel as good as possible
your pic is actually a hedonistic argument for war: it says war has positive hedonic effects in that it's conducive to positive psychological states

It presumes that out evolutionarily developed instincts are the sum total of what we are rather than recognizing that they are inherited behavioral tendencies that are only good in as much as they benefit what we really are.

>It presumes that out evolutionarily developed instincts are the sum total of what we are
how does it presume that?

Maybe I'm mistaken about what is meant by hedonism. You should lay out more precisely what you mean in your OP if you want to start a discussion defending it.

If you feel hungry you should eat
If you want to sleep in you should sleep in
etc

Is this hedonism or not?

You're implying that that's living

Effectively, happiness, sadness and all other emotions are just an instinctual reaction to outside stimulai.
We have our preset physical needs that inevitably get tied to these emotions and occupy a great deal of their priorities.
Embracing this state of affairs os to effectively choose to live as no more than an animal. The hedonist isnt responsible for anything since the hedonist ultimately only seeks immediate gratification in relation to the environment.

There is no introspection, no self criticism and no desire to uncover the hedonists behavioural flaws lest he then be met with the unpleasant task of correcting them.

In short, the hedonist in practice, doesnt think, it reacts.
Effectively the opposite of morality.

How does an animal live?

An amoral existence though unlike the hedonist, it has no choice, which is why it is not called immoral.

>effectively the opposite of morality
>muh morality
Rearrange your post since from that basis an atom is hedonist

Why can't a hedonist think AND react? I'd imagine that a smart one would consider which decision would ultimately result in a net gain of satisfaction.

I will not rearrange anything though I might care to further elaborate since you are clearly not aware of the practical difference between a single atom and trillions of atoms arranged in such a way as to produce a human mind.

A mind capable of choice that is to make a concious decision regardless of the information input of is something that can be heald moraly accountable.
All else can bear no morality of any kind.

This thread has reminded me about how the cows have best friends and when separated they feel. sad. kinda.

You still need energy input and that energy has information.
>capable of choice
My, my.

Because simply put, doing so means having to consider what the hedonists goals actually are and why.
Physical emmediate gratification will do quite handily.
Why exchange being assured an ignorant and blissfull existence for the mere prospect of something more?

If we get to the point where you can practically predict all things that occur ever then yes, we can pretend that choice isnt real.
Free will and morality arnt real in the same sense that time isnt relly real.
You will still deal with them as if they were unless youre either insane, or a literal god.

Nice.
Our biological radar that seeks anticipation is deterministic but the universe is not, this causes the free will illusion.

It depends on what you mean by hedonism.

Do you mean the thoughtful hedonism of Epicurus, which was not about indulging in the pleasures of the fresh, but rather about the pleasures of the mind and absence of pain? Where pleasure is more or less defined as happiness and a simple life, even ascetic life.

>When we say, then, that pleasure is the end and aim, we do not mean the pleasures of the prodigal or the pleasures of sensuality, as we are understood to do by some through ignorance, prejudice, or willful misrepresentation. By pleasure we mean the absence of pain in the body and of trouble in the soul. It is not an unbroken succession of drinking-bouts and of revelry, not sexual lust, not the enjoyment of the fish and other delicacies of a luxurious table, which produce a pleasant life; it is sober reasoning, searching out the grounds of every choice and avoidance, and banishing those beliefs through which the greatest tumults take possession of the soul. Of all this the beginning and the greatest good is wisdom. Therefore wisdom is a more precious thing even than philosophy ; from it spring all the other virtues, for it teaches that we cannot live pleasantly without living wisely, honorably, and justly; nor live wisely, honorably, and justly without living pleasantly. For the virtues have grown into one with a pleasant life, and a pleasant life is inseparable from them.

or by hedonism do you mean in the modern sense of the world, where instead of having a contemplative life you act like this kind of people, who live mindless, concerning themselves on how to maximize pleasures of the senses?

Epicurean hedonism is not perfect, but it is sensible and will lead to a more pleasant life than not following anything. The second kind of hedonism is that of animals. It won't lead to a more pleasant life.

refer to these:

philosophical hedonism is the metaethical theory that all value reduces to pleasure/happiness
applied to the question of the meaning of life, it entails that life is about being happy (in the subjective/psychological sense)
that's what the OP is asking about

well from this thread it seems hedonists are retards since they can't even be bothered to lay out what they mean by pleasure and happiness

When did someone request to have it laid out?

sustainable Hedonism is the way to go

yes
