200 years ago you could have bought a commission if you had the money and social standing. Why should it be an issue that officer training is now largely meritocratic, unless merit is what you sorely lack? If you are truly interested in a career as an officer and not just an abject loser fantasizing about being magicked away into another life you could be using your time at university to hit your extracurriculars in preparation.
