ITT: discuss martial arts, give rundowns of what you've trained etc.

I want to start training something but I have trouble choosing. I don't care purely about the effectiveness, so I don't find boxing or krav maga appealing.
I was thinking about taking up taekwondo to hopefully increase my flexibility and mobility, which is currently shit. What do you think?

I know a guy who is medium height and has always been quite lean and he got really into TKD and got his black belt in about 4 or 5 years. He can do lots of head high kicks and spinning back kicks and all that sort of shit. So it's quite good for what you want, but he also does bjj for that ground game.

I'm not lean though, I've always been rather bulky, so I figured I could use something to increase my mobility.
I wonder thought if taekwondo is effective at all? Would someone training tkd for, let's say 5 years, stand a chance against someone with simmilar experience but in karate, aikido, boxing or whatever?

Does the bulk hold back your mobility? If so cardio and stretching is going to assist you in getting those head high kicks.

From what I've been told, TKD isn't shit hot in an actual fight. You're not always going to have space to use big head high kicks and if you fuck it up you're leaving yourself in a very vulnerable position.

Karate, if it's the full contact sort and not mcdojo shit, is supposed to be pretty good. Boxing is very good for fitness and actual fighting. Kickboxing will give you effective kicks and punches as well as knees and elbows if you take up the thai style.

Aikido from everything I've ever heard is absolutely fucking bad. Avoid

there's a famous muay thai gym but it's packed, asks 45euro and the guy doesnt give a fuck about you unless youre one of the ones competing


what can I move onto? there's no other boxing place so I'm clueless.
thought about MMA since i've heard there's a ym here but isnt it a shitfest to learn a martial art in any decent way if its multiple of them?

Bit of a weird question, is it common to get accidentally kicked in the groin when someone's demonstrating a kick to you slowly?

When I boxed, sometimes, there'd be accidents when practicing sequences when you went HAM

it's normal, but if you have your guard and attention on point you can usually defend yourself. and if youre advanced, you'll probably hit back in response kek

Serious question. I do JuJitsu and Muay Thai 2-3 days a week. I feel like I am losing muscle mass from not lifting as much anymore. Back in the day I was a 6 day a week lifter.

How do I continue to train in martial arts while maintaining my gainz?

Eat more? Ultimately the martial arts are going to keep you healthier, better posture, better balance and mobility than picking up and putting down heavy shit until you go to snap city

Oh it was more like a prod cos he was showing me how to do a Muay Thai sidekick. Maybe it was cos I moved at the last moment. Shit like this used to make me depressed cos I have a bit of an sjw mindset and think everything is harassment.

Getting into a lot of fights had the reverse effect of making me homophobic and against bodily contact. I'm getting more used to it though since getting clipped in the head a few times by accident in boxing.

Id say tkd is a good supplementary art for fighting but not a primary one.

As I mentioned fighting isn't my primary concern. I was just thinking that since tkd relies on kicks it will be the best for improving my overall flexibility and mobility. I can't even rise and hold my leg in the air above 90 degrees as of now.

If you want flexibility. The best would be an external or northern Kung fu style because they have many jumping, lunging and kicking techniques. Look into long fist.

Worried about becoming a fat fuck. My job keeps me in a vehicle for 16+ hours at a time so my calorie intake has to be really careful

It's not a meme, the main issue is that the cultural revolution heavily damaged its professionalism, popularity and spread in China, leaving mcdojos and inadequate practitioners to teach it in the west.

It entirely depends on the master you train with, so research them properly. Also you said you didn't care about practicality, kungfu is the king when it comes to flexible styles.

I suggest trying long fist, sanda (practical as fuck), shuai jiao, bajiquan, taijiquan, xingyiquan and baguazhang.

All these are some of the most practical Kung fu styles out there, most are internal, which is great for your body.

If you have issues with finding good instructors where you live, then look for a sanda teacher since that's one of the most widespread Chinese martial art (striking + clinching, specialises in takedowns). Looks like Muay Thai or kickboxing to the novice but it's a combination of practical Kung fu techniques.

It's the same for Western arts like Boxing too bruh. Your trainer better have competed or trained good fighters.

That's why a lot of the best kungfu is either in families that teach it hereditarily or old men from the countryside villages.

Wing Chun and TKD are both memes. Don't bother if you're looking for a workout or something to help you in a fight.

Chi sau is fun. It's basically a game. Not to brag, but I'm really good at it. Unfortunately it doesn't scale very much into actual fighting, which is why I say it's a meme.

TKD is a gigantic meme. Just look up flexibility and mobility exercises.

Why is TKD a meme?

Taekwondo is just shittier kickboxing with shitty katas.

In America, the overwhelming majority of TKD dojos are opened by people who don't really know it themselves, and are just there to make some easy bucks off idiots.
Then you have the people who actually know TKD, but the only thing they care about is tournaments and scoring points in them. So the teaching is streamlined for that goal. You can't even call it a martial art anymore, it's basically a normal sport. The actual martial art isn't practiced by a lot of people anymore.

Judo and jiu jutsu here. I like the aikido and judo elements in jiu jutsu, not so much the karate. Tried tae kwon do and found it boring for the same reason I don't like the karate elements - punching/kicking the air and practicing steps for hours on end is not really fun.

How do I find a good mma or kickboxing gym? I've looked in google maps but they all seem shady as hell or really far away. I live in Miami Florida btw.
