as i understand it, we make our own gods and (as humans) find meaning in seemingly random things. be your own god, worship a big bearded man in the sky, hell worship superman or darkseid if you want, if you build it to be a god it is a god

Well dude religion is not a choice. It's not a doctrine. Everybody is religious whether they will admit it or not. Everyone lives by their own dogma.
All Peter boy is saying is that it's fundamentally beneficial to the individual and thus society to embrace some system of belief and to frame the unknown, which does us so much harm, in ways that our primate brains can understand, control and even benefit from.

God may or may not exist. For all intents and purposes it doesn't matter. The act of belief or faith or congruence that belief can bring is the only really significant thing.

Yeah I guess I just got back from getting drunk. What I'm saying is that there is not choice in whether or not you believe. Everyone believes something. It's absolutely intrinsic to our psyche.
The choice you get to make is whether you embrace and shape that belief and let it alleviate you of certain burdens or if you rail against it and make yourself miserable.

There is an inexplicability to life that you can either cower from or assign a certain set of rules (dogma) that allows you to partition and control and disregard/take strength form.

I was raised in a christian orthodox family. I've always been living by christian values, it's just that now I admit it. The only thing that changed from when I was an atheist is that I don't hate christianity anymore.
It wasn't a major revelation, more like a reallignment of my beliefs to be more in line with my current and past behaviour.
