Post countries that have survived as a state, culture, language, ethnicity, etc, against poor odds throughout history.
Here is my pick: Czech Republic >conquered by Austria Hungry >forced to speak German >bulk of WWI army was Czech and they were slaughtered >got freedom for like 15 years >conquered by Germans >forced to produce weapons and tanks for them >got freedom for like 3 years >conquered by communists >Russian mandatory in schools >forced to take in Vietnamese refugees during Vietnam war >only country that had a peaceful revolution after communism fell >split from slovakia >basically forced to join EU but retained their own currency >currently 99% white and czech is still the spoken language >economy is slowing growing and recovering >currently telling the EU to go fuck itself
>conquered by Austria Hungry >forced to take in Vietnamese refugees during Vietnam war >split from slovakia >basically forced to join EU but retained their own currency >currently telling the EU to go fuck itself >bulk of WWI army was Czech and they were slaughtered

>against poor odds throughout history
My pick >established 680 >from 1018-1185 conquered by the Byzantine empire >again a country between 1185-1396 >from 1396-1878 in the Ottoman empire >again a country between 1878-1944 >from 1944-1989 in the Soviet sphere Being conquered by the three shittiest entities in existence and still keeping your original name is not that bad.
Parker Scott
Nothing really special about any of that.
Matthew Morgan
Based country but very poor. Kind of reminds of Croatia. Basicly the same deal where they were never really a free country.

Portugal seems resilient af, although they weren't occupied many times. >1130 - Heir of the County of Portugal fights his own mother's forces for the county's independence and wins. >1383 - Castille sends an army to occupy Portugal after a succesion crisis. Is beaten despite outnumbering Portuguese 4-1 >1560 - Crown Prince goes off to fight a retarded offensive in North Africa because muh infidels, gets himself killed with no heirs. Crown ends up with his uncle, the King of Spain >1640 - revolted against the Union with Spain and succeeded, somehow take back all the colonial holdings the Dutch and British took in Brazil. >1755 - huge earthquake destroys the capital and most major cities >1805 - Napoleon invades, the royal family flees to Brazil, British help drive the French out but remain in Portugal, turning it into a de facto protectorate. >Popular revolts break out leading to a civil war between pretenders to the throne.

This is correct. I have extracted part of a Slav, chopped it up, blended it and put into a spectrometer. Turned out Slavs are red.

The little blue part are France. The people there subjugated all the rest and were enough to keep in check any invasion from England, Germany, Italy, Spain.

>isn't original bulgars a turkic tribe later assimilated by slavics? Turkic, Iranian, whatever. Point is the country kept its name for 1300+ years. It was called Bulgaria, its people Bulgarians then and it was continuously called that to this day.
Aiden Gonzalez
Like the P. Avars and Huns, the Bulgars arrived in Moesia with a lot of Slavic warriors already with them. Becoming Orthodox probably expedited the process of assimilation. I find the Magyars to be more interesting, considering that - somehow - they got everyone speaking that incomprehensible jargon only they can understand, as opposed to the standard sclavene dialect.
Michael Williams
>Huns
Should have specified that the Huns came with Germans, not Slavs.
Christian Garcia
I think a lot of people assume the Bulgars suddenly appeared from out of nowhere in the 7th century. You have to keep in mind they were living in what is today Romania and Ukraine for centuries before that and had regular contacts with the Byzantines and the various Slavic tribes there and in the Balkans. And we know very little about the Bulgar language so we can't really say how much of it was not-Slavic before the Christianisation in the 9th century.
But yeah, the Hungarians are interesting because they got to keep their "original" language.

My pick >Turks attack for 1.5 thousand years from north and east >Pashtuns from south >Forced to forget national identification >Soviets give national republic only few years of hard fight tajik elite with uzbek >Now still try to get turkizated by uzbeks and turks >Now president say that better save nation then be true islamists >People still live there and dont run from country as years ago >Born more children with at least not black hair and brown eyes >Language delete non-persian words

They were part of the Austrian Empire, which existed hundreds of years before the Austro-Hungarian compromise.
>forced to speak German German was the language of the bureaucracy and was preferred, leading to it being adopted widely, not to mention the fact there was a large German minority already
>bulk of WWI army was Czech and they were slaughtered definitely not the bulk
>conquered by communists that was a putsch, not a conquest
>forced to take in Vietnamese refugees during Vietnam war sure, some came during the Vietnam war, but most of them were here to get education and go back to Vietnam, though they never did
>only country that had a peaceful revolution after communism fell ??? no
>basically forced to join EU but retained their own currency no, there was a referendum on it, nobody forced anyone
>currently telling the EU to go fuck itself yeah, and once they leave the EU, they go the route back to the arms of the Russians
