If it were me I'd explain to her why diet is the most important thing to lose weight and that she needs to find out what her cutting calories is.

Tell her that without a well thought out plan you will not lose weight and if she doesn't listen to you then you should gather info on how well she is doing weight wise and make a good sheet of information that details her weigh ins and measurements so you can prove to her after 3 months or so that her idea isn't working and that should hopefully push her to listen to you.
