Why would pre 1800s women be ugly? Natural beauty has always existed, even though it became more uncommon to see naturally beautiful women after make-up became every woman's best friend.
I was under the impression that it was just beauty standards changing over time. Weren't all the plain/weird looking women in ancient paintings 10/10 qts in their day?

Not really. There's plenty of contemporary accounts in history where wealthy, noble and royal women are called ugly in varying degrees.
