Tiny horses

It's so hard for me to understand how an army in the 11/1200's killed 10s of millions.

Horse archers were ridiculously OP pre gunpowder.

They would always attack somewhere other than where you'd built up forces, so you could never concentrate your forces to meet them. If you managed to send foot soldiers to where they actually were, the archers would use their mobility to stay just out of reach and pelt you with arrows.

The traditional thing that you did to keep horse archers from wrecking your shit was to pay one batch of horse archers to beat up the other guys, or just build walls to keep them out.

The Mongols unified the steppe in their area and developed pretty good siegecraft.

Combine this with a god tier intelligence service and general staff and you have one of the most dangerous military machines of all time.

Non-mongols btfo

Not to mention they were sneaky motherfuckers in general, faking retreats to then murder the opposing armies when they broke ranks to pursue.
My favorite episode is when the mongols are somewhere close to Russia, and they pick a fight with some group, and realize they're in over their heads, so they surrender and offer tribute.
The enemy accepts the tribute and when they've departed with the booty the mongols follow and engage them again when, due to the booty, they're too weighed down to fight back properly, and the mongols slaughter them all and take bake their stuff.

Why don't more armies do this?

noble phantasm

Even after the Mongols, 100 years war, Hussite wars,Ottoman wars in balkans, and the black death, by the late 14th century, the world's population had increased by twice as much as the previous century. You would think that europe by that time would be some kind of post-apocalyptic setting akin to the collapse of rome days, but no everything carried off normally and urbanization in fact increased tremendously.

Horse arching

If Dan Carlin explained this to me correctly, the Eurasian steppe was pretty much constantly at war, so tactics were constantly being developed and copies and refined, and there was this Darwinian process where only the very best fighters could stay alive.

Well mostly because the few times the Mongols got away with it, it was because they slaughtered everyone so the word didnt get out.
There was also the whole honor business, especially in Europe that doing this type of shit was fucking bullshit, and you were a massive fucking faggot if you did. But once they saw people doing it and word got out, the Mongols lost that edge and were eventually beaten pretty soundly quite a few times.
Its a miracle that Genghis died just as the Mongols were dipping their toes into Europe, otherwise they might've just gone all the way to the Atlantic, if they'd gotten through all the castles.

killing all the time travelers that go back in time to kill him while ignoring hitler

I'm pretty sure this was kind of the case in most of Europe too, lords and knights were fucking with each other all the time, which does mean whatever edge you get better get put to use or you eat shit fast. Probably one of the reasons us Europeans got so good at kicking ass. Nothing drives innovation like the potential destruction of everything you hold dear.

See, I may be full of shit here, but as I understand it, medieval Europe had constantly low level conflict that was blunted by castles and poor logistical systems, making it important to be good at fighting, but equally important to have a stable political footing and good diplomatic ties.

On the steppe, you have constant wars of annihilation and everyone is moving around constantly. New confederations and tribes and languages and nations are constantly showing up and moving about, so honor is much more devalued.

Yes I doubt that the political situation on the steppes was as rigid and defined as in medieval period, but it still existed, Genghis did kind of overturn it when he got into power.
Not to mention that the sparseness of resources probably means that any way to get ahead is acceptable, where as this might not have been the case in Europe.

As a child his father was murdered, he was betrayed by his own tribe, he lived in poverty and cold in the wilderness, hunting for his mother. In his rise he was imprisoned and enslaved, even cuckolded.

The horse does not know why the spur pricks it. The iron does not know why the hammer beats it. Humans see a world filled with evil and curse the Gods, yet the young Temujin realized the pain was cleansing him of weakness. Excellence does not lie in good fortune, but in action, will, what matters is the present and what you control. He learned not to dread the future, only to ensure his actions were proper. You could lie in chains or huddled up to your mother at the mercy of greater forces, no matter how physically restrained you are there are no spiritural restraints, you can try to figure out a way to escape and take the risk, you can leave the warmth to check on your snares.

Perhaps he remembered the words of some wandering shaman as a babby, maybe he figured it out on his own, however he became so wise, Temujin learned to clear his mind of all folly leaving only those things which truly matter. No matter how dim the ember, if it is all that is left it will become the supreme commander of your will, one does not need to be a mystic philosopher, all you need is to set aside the meaningless, the ghosts, the spooks.

Like a wind cast by the skyfather Tengri he spread this message, from Mongol to Mongol it spread, those who did not listen were cast down, those that did were lifted up and. The Mongols mastered the material world, making manifest the will of the courageous Mongol Genghis long after his death.

Mind as strong as steel, even with the burning pain of swords, courageous Mongol Genghis.

Impossible to tell, could go either way based on timing. But Genghis clearly had concerns, because Jochi didn’t inherit the title of Khagan
