bitfinex probably doesn't use tether to trade on their own exchange themselves. people are probably assuming too much there. it's not hard at all for le early adapters to set up spoofs and drive people on twitter and across other exchanges wild.
that doesn't stop the scheme from being poorly audited. i don't have a huge issue with it personally, but i would rather use other stable/pegged crypto.
