There were few socially awkward people. In the past they depended more on the community and had to go out to earn a living so they had to interact with "normies" and likewise "normies" had a harder time getting rid of them, they would learn social skills and because there were fewer there was less of a stigma.

Nowadays they are kept isolated by single mothers or deluded boomer parents, pigeonholed because they have no knowledge of pop culture and when they do try to interact they are faced with hostility from almost everyone.
