Nietzsche criticized the Church, not the religion itself. He was pissed about church never following the Christs footprints, while claiming it and monopolizing it. By the 19th century Church was merely a husk of it's glory (even though misscaried) and not needed anymore.

I didn't say he's not an atheist I said the quote wasn't about atheism, it's not meant as a proof of God's nonexistence it's about secularism in society, the metaphor is that man no longer believes in or pays heed to their belief in God, therefore he's dead in our minds.
