Normally its Veeky Forums tier to laugh at real lose, but every lifter I've spoken to about this and including my self is of the opionion. If you're going for a big bench, either have a spotter or have pins that'll catch the weight. Natural selection imo.

You really need to just have pins. The real danger of bench press isn't failing the weight, the Roll of Shame isn't perfectly safe, but it will save your life. DROPPING the weight is what kills you, literally, and a spotter won't be able to do jack shit besides call an ambulance if that happens.
