1st 5km Marathon protips

hi Veeky Forums, please help me win the 5km Marathon I'm participating in tomorrow
I've been running for roughly half a year (so not much), my mental aim is to just to get to the Finish line in time, I don't expect to be faster than the pros, but protips would be helpful

mostly I'm thinking about power management - when should I give my best and when too cool down, is the first kilometer the place to speed up to flee from the others? when I casually run I often get a lot of power in my legs AFTER I've run for some time, it's like a nitro I can pull off if I really want to try hard
also considering the road should I just keep to the side in which it will turn at the next intersection? or is it better to keep in the middle at longer stretches of the road?

PS it will be held on the streets of my town, 5km I can run within 1 hour no problem (I think I ran it in 30 minutes before)

I just don't know how to answer user

5km is not a marathon. A marathon is a marathon, for one. Only fatfucks and retards call running 5 kilometres a marathon.

Literally just run and keep a reasonable pace. If you start to get winded, slow it dosn, but don't walk thats stupid. Running 5km isn't difficult for anyone.

you're right, I wanted to put it in quotes, but it would sound self-defeatist

Don't get in your own head about it. Do your best, self monitor, and just cross that finish line. You've never done this before, so at absolute worst, you can use this to determine a baseline and see what areas you'll need to improve on for your next 5km.

We're all gonna make it. Do your best, have fun--there's no reason to get yourself all stressed out over it and doing so will take all the fun out of the day

If you've been running for half a year you should be able to hit 5k 25 minutes, even 22.

yeah, I'll do my best
I was running with that interval meme app 'from 0 to 5km' - I'm not sure how the app is counting everything though, but my average projected time for 5K is 30 minutes

From my experience:
>dont change anything in your regular routine leading up to the race
>always start slow since youll have an adrenaline dump off the start due to some nerves and you dont want to burn out later

THIS...

...

you'd be surprised how many people think of 5km as much, especially Americans

W1 = week 1

It’s not a marathon you fucking loser. It’s a 5k. If you’ve been running for 6 months and can’t breeze through a 5k, just end it already. You’re pathetic. 10 year old girls run 5ks while laughing and messing around. Stop acting as if you’re tackling some grant feat here. Just put your shoes on and run the weak ass 5k you fat fuck. Stop being such an uneducated lazy dipshit loser. Figure it the fuck out already assclown.

>km I can run within 1 hour no problem (I think I ran it in 30 minutes before)
i used to jog like 4-5 every morning, and that would only take like 10-20 minutes max. mind you i was completely fucked afterwards. now i've gone to sprinting up hills. high intensity activities improve your fitness faster than paced long distance activity and hill give you the calves of a god as does jogging in steel caps.

10 minutes to run 4k? are you a cyborg man

These people are so weak and pathetic it’s disgusting

Are you super man. Those are some great times you have there. It amazes me how stupid people can be, as they’re giving advice no less.

I'm sorry user. I would have better luck helping a quad amputee win the High Bar event at the next Olympics.
Drink plenty of fluids. No Dairy today or tomorrow. Stretch. Wear loose clothes that isn't heavy. Pace yourself because money hungry bitches wanna chase your wealth. Relax your shoulders.

lmao im gonna eat kebab today, i'm not gonna do diet for a 5km walk in a park
i just wanted some technical protips but i think i know everything already, thanks

>If you've been running for half a year you should be able to hit 5k 25 minutes, even 22.

does it matter if you've been running on a deficit? I'm barely able to break 26.5mins after a few months

make sure you get enough carb and not too much fat

You’re just a bitch, point blank son

Pretty much. There aren't many secrets to distance races that aren't just prep stuff. Seriously relax your shoulders when running though as keeping them high is a semi tense position and tense muscles are always the hungriest

you realize that's only like 24km an hour, anyway i meant somewhere between 10 an 20 probably closer to twenty. doesn't sound that impressive to me i can sprint at roughly 35km an hour.

You're completely right, not impressive at all.

Start off medium effort and don't try to be at the front, cool off midway through and for the last third/quarter or so speed up as much as you can, try to image you're chasing whoever is in front of you. You might want to try a very slow 500m or so warm up jog before hand to rev up your legs too.

The trick is really to just keep going, find a steady pace and alternate between faster and slower for recovery with correct running form, make sure you're breathing properly as well with BIG deep slow breaths not shallow quick ones.

"professional athletes" usually finish somewhere between 15-18 minutes so for the average healthy guy anywhere between 25-30 is respectable, I just about manage 27 myself.

As long as you've done the distance before there's no reason you can't again, godspeed user.

very nice protip! what does the cool off phase mean tho? still going medium speed or going slightly slower to power up later?

>5km
>Marathon
pick one dyel faggot

You'll probably be sweating/tiring a lot once you get started so after the initial medium effort you want to slow down slightly to a steady constant pace that you can maintain without wearing yourself out. So as to reserve a good bit of your energy for that final long sprint.

first 2,5 km medium pace
next 1 km cooling down
remaining 1,5 km fastest

his sweat forms two swastikas on his forehead

all the stupid advice from people who obviously know nothing about running is triggering me hard
