Ima be honest. There's no way to know exactly how much she eats while on her shift. I also work at a restaurant and I eat anywhere between 1k and 2k calories a day for fucking free.

So either you need to follow the bitch around to get an exact count of calories, or consider it a lost cause because she WILL lie to you about how much she eats.

I was eating 1200 calories a day and working out 5 times a week (cardio and lifting), but wasn't losing weight (only inches).

Turns out I was doing two things wrong - drinking alcohol and doing the same cardio every day (cycling). I don't know what it is about alcohol, especially as I only drink spirits with diet mixers, but even adding up the calories I just cannot lose weight while drinking.

Does your girlfriend drink? I wouldn't be surprised if she was eating more than she thought she was either, especially working in a restaurant who tend to use oils and other calorific things to make food taste amazing.

Perhaps advise her to start taking her own lunch into work (chicken and vegetables) and workout with you. She might be on her feet all day but just like me and cycling, your body gets used to regular movements. Your heart rate is also unlikely to be elevated if you're just walking between tables.

It's hard, but sometimes you become so focused on low calorie diets that you miss out on obvious mistakes you're making. A food logger is essential for weight loss. Starting a fresh and really committing might see a change in her weight.

There is such a thing as ‘set weight theory’ which is pretty empirically supported.

However, a high set weight is an epigenetic factor that is determined by a long history of eating at a caloric surplus.

Metabolisms are pretty stable over time. Unless she’s going through menopause or has a thyroid issue so taking new meds then her metabolic rate won’t change much.

Most likely she is doing what everybody does, underestimating calories/underestimating expenditure.

People over 29 bmi (overweight) underestimate calorie consumption by 50% on average. That means that 49% of overweight people who think they eat 1500 kcal a day are eating closer to 3000.

It’s more a byproduct of psychology than a ‘fault’. The real issue is how to fix the problem instead of assigning blame.

Get her on myfitness pal if she’s not already, have her track calories. Tell her it’s likely she’s eating a surplus, so have her add 200-300 cals on top of what she’s tracking for good measure.

Have her do cardio, which does have (limited) metabolic benefits. Have her do weightlifting, which increases energy requirements, but not metabolic rate.

The key is to stay positive. You are trying to actually help her, not make her feel bad.
