Just went to the doctor today for a sinus infection. Ended up making it about my weight. Thanks doc.
I've been weight lifting and doing squats at home with a barbell and dumbbell set I bought. I can feel tight abs no more than an inch deep if I poke my stomach, biceps are getting large, pecs too. I can FEEL the muscle right there, but I'm still visibly fat. Doctor says around 400lbs (I forgot exactly how much, but I've gone this far, does it really matter?)
I'm 5' 11'', and I've always been a big person. Both sides of my family have large frames, but havent been particularly fat like me.(I'm a typical endomorph)
Doctor said I should stop lifting weights immediately and do only cardio. He says I'll end up like a pro football player and die of heart disease later in life because when my muscles deteriorate/lose their mass, it will create an excess amount of protein in my system which will clog my arteries.
I havent read anything anywhere that supports what he said. I'v always hated how fat I am, but now I can say (and feel) I'm not all fat. So wtf do I do? Is building muscle really this bad while I'm fat?
Dylan Young
>400 lbs Holy shit he fell actually fell for the bloatmaxx meme we got one of em boys
Anthony Bailey
Nah bruh, I'm a fatass without the help of your memes. You got any real advice or are you just a worthless goon?
Jace Williams
seriously nigger? is this bait?
ill bite...
Simply, add cardio. if you're >400lbs it implies you cannot run, nor bike, so walk. -Walk 30 minutes or more a day. -Strive to walk more every week -Monitor your caloric intake every wonderful day-- create a deficit that results in 2lb fatloss/week -keep losing weight until you reach a healthy weight and body fat %
congrats you made it
Brandon Cooper
I honestly can't tell if this is bait or not. But I'm choosing to believe you so don't fuck me on this ok? You should absolutely lift weight. The additional muscle mass will burn more energy making it easier to lose weight. You'll also find it easier to move and thus do cardio if you have additions strength to support you. Those bro football player die of heart disease because they're either fatasses (linemen) or they quit football but continue to eat like they always have and end up being a ball of pudding
Tyler Rodriguez
Damn, phone posting makes me sound like Tommy Wiseau
James Moore
>"...400 lbs..." >"...not all fat..."
pick one nigger...
lose weight, there is no fucking way you can be healthy at 400lbs.
Kayden Cook
It's not bait. I'm actually trying to make a positive difference in my life. Every time I come here to the fitness board, I expect actual advice, but all anyone has to offer is that classic Veeky Forums brand of venomous name calling.
I actually can bike. I can also jog. I'm confused about my weight because I cant tell how much is fat, and how much is muscle. I've been doing weights and things since I was in high school.
I dont feel like a blob, but I weigh as much as one.
Jaxson Brown
Post body
Ayden Butler
it isnt all fat. If you actually read anything, you saw where I mentioned, that yes, while I do have fat, I've also got clear, defined muscle if you press nearly anywhere.
Less than half a fingernail's depth on my stomach and you can feel my abs right there.
Not trying to sound stupid or whatever. I legitimately dont know what to do. I grew up drinking diet soda all my life cuz my parents didnt know any better about that shit, and there's so much conflicting information on the internet, I dont know where to begin.
Now my doctor is telling me all the squats and bench pressing I'm doing may actually be killing me. If you cant see how that could be a touch confusing, then you've got bigger problems than me
Asher White
It doesn't matter how much is fat and how much is muscle. Just know that a lot of it is fat and it should be your goal to lose as much of it as possible in a sensible way by developing better life style habits. Eat less, exercise more both weights and cardio and stick to it. It will take time
Carson Martinez
TL;DR No shit I need to do cardio, but is what the doctor said true? I went to this guy about a sinus infection, not a nutritionist.
I have literally never heard that building too much muscle can somehow lead to heart disease because when I get older it will deteriorate into protein and clog my arteries.
All I'm asking is, is he full of shit? Is he right? Thats all.
Isaac Cook
Thank you. I am aware I have a long way to go. I obviously want to lose my fat as well. I just dont know if what my doctor said was true.
He basically told me to abandon weight lifting because too much muscle will kill me later in life.
The guy isnt a nutritionist, and I didnt go there for weight advice. So I'm conflicted over his instructions.
Oliver Parker
The thing is, being at that weight it is very difficult to imagine you at a healthy body fat percentage.. this being the case, obesity or excess body fat is highly correlated to a host of diseases and cancers including and especially cardiovascular disease.
Robert Thompson
do not abandon weight lifting, your doctor is wrong. it is an absolutely excellent way to aid in fat loss and overall health.
Matthew Robinson
keep lifting, but fucking CUT, MOTHERFUCKER CUT KEEP CUTTING TILL THAT 400 BECOMES 300, THAT 300 BECOMES 200, AND THEN, ONLY THEN CAN YOU EVEN THINK TO CONSIDER BULKING
YOU FAT MOTHERFUCKER, FOCUS ON CARDIO BECAUSE CARDIO BURNS MORE CALORIES.
IT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAT STRENGTH TRAINING RIGHT NOW.
AND PUT DOWN THAT GODDAMN SPOON. YOU ARE BETTER THAN THIS, YOU STUPID NEANDERTHAL.
Asher Hernandez
I never said anything about me being at a healthy weight. Make no mistake, I am aware I am at an unhealthy weight.
My question is, IS there really such a thing as building too much muscle?
I always thought building muscle would be good for me. I like the way my arms and pecs feel. My stomach is noticeably less squishy (save for around the sides) and I'm able to lift things I never could before.
Lifting weights makes me feel strong and happy about myself, and less like a blob.
I dont want to stop doing it unless it really is not good for my health somehow.
Jacob Taylor
Top killers in the US: 1) heart disease 2) medical malpractice
The medical field itself is brilliant and amazing, but individual doctors can be very stupid. The simple fact that one person cannot specialize in everything, coupled with a god complex and narcissism which is strangely a common trait in doctors mean that you need to take charge of your treatment. Get a second opinion. Obamacare allows everyone to go directly to s specialist if they choose. Make an appointment with a nutritionist(not a dietician).
When was the last time you heard a doctor(or first year Reddit med student) honestly say "I don't know"? They got their head in the clouds and no dog in the fight. Take control of what YOU do with YOUR body.
Dominic Johnson
you will only build too much if you take exogenous hormonal aids. in that case yes.
Asher Powell
Thank you. Some legit advice. I will seek out a second opinion tomorrow morning. I didnt know Obamacare was an option for resources like that.
Aiden Jenkins
Sometimes, it doesn't matter if most of it is muscle. The heart still has to lug around 400 lbs. That will take a very serious strain on your heart muscle. Ever heard about big strong athletes dieing because of heart failure? Well... it's the weight and thermodynamics failing you. Not because you are mostly muscle.
Leo Smith
This wtf op how can we help without a pic
Joshua Thomas
GOOD ADVICE FROM THE DEVIL HIMSELF.
Charles Hall
I wasnt asking for weight advice. I am well aware I need to lose weight.
My fucking question was about if what my doctor said was full of shit or if its true.
But it took everyone about 10 minutes to stop chimping out making fat jokes before we actually got some proper advice.
The fuck is the point of this board if only to insult people? Really. I'd go to /b/ if I wanted to be told I'm worthless and fat.
Aaron Wilson
He's not going to cuz he knows he's a landwhale
Gabriel Butler
100% bait. At 5'11 400lbs you are morbidly obese and your mobility would be severely restricted. You can't even squat, deadlift or bench properly. Everything you do is 1/5th of a rep, if you think you 'bench' 225 you're probably only able to do 155 full ROM. You have almost no muscle guaranteed.
You say you can jog, total bullshit. A 15 step shuffle isn't a jog. Stop eating literally everything in the fridge and see how you go at 300lb.
Jaxon Hill
> OP wants advice > doesn't give us the means to give it
Leo Jackson
Alright I'll try to answer this fully but the problem is that there is so much wrong with what your doctor said. Firstly forget about any concept of building too much muscle, if that is a thing you are not at risk of it and anyone that could be held up as an example has so many other things going on (drugs n shit) that it's a pointless comparison. Now the idea that protein can blood arteries is nonsense, i don't even know where that came from. Muscle loss is bad because you lose the benefits of strenght thats all. Muscle can break down so fast that it creates harmful toxins but that is either due to disease or doing crossfit neither thing you should have to worry about. Age related muscle wasting is done in a controlled manner that your body is easily able to deal with.
In summation your doctor is wrong and you should lift more weight
Brandon Garcia
thought this was bait but seems like a legit question, so>deteriorate/lose their mass, it will create an excess amount of protein in my system which will clog my arteries. sounds like bullshit anyway, but hes right that you should stop lifting. at that weight you could literally have a heart attack from lifting and even if you don't, it shit for your joints. start slow with cardio at your weight, walking or swimming should be your only options, just remember, progress is not linear. you should stick at a caloric deficit and get advice from a nutritionist if you dont know bout nutrition yourself, which im assuming you dont.
Lincoln Kelly
>newfag doesnt know all of Veeky Forums is like this
Xavier Morgan
That is supposed to say the idea that protein can clog arteries is nonsense
Robert Anderson
Just show a got dam pic op i wanna see what a 400 person with only a half inch of fat looks like
Jaxon Thomas
more muscle will improve insulin sensitivity and calorie partitioning, not to mention overall quality of life.
your doctor is a retard. even if he was right to tell you to stop being fat.
Thomas Carter
I'm starting to think that OP lacks a Y chromosome because that kind of delusional justification is very common amongst female fats
Xavier Ross
bro you are in no position to question your doctor. You're literally 400lbs, you don't worry about anything other than losing weight,
Nathan Ramirez
Smart doctor lies to you about having muscle so you will go do cardio first.
Good guy desu.
Colton Bennett
>falling for this shit tier b8
Cameron Foster
if this is bait, he is doing a good job of playing it off.
Luis Hall
you people are retarded, obvious bait
Evan Adams
kek
Justin Torres
put down the barbell fatty. squat without weights, thats 400 lbs already. we don't want you to die.
Oliver Murphy
>Doctor said I should stop lifting weights immediately and do only cardio.
Your doctor sounds American and like a piece of shit. Weight training should be a staple in treatment of obesity for it's help with posture, insulin sensitivity, improvement of metabolism and it's relative safety and accessibility.
Parker Russell
> >Less than half a fingernail's depth on my stomach and you can feel my abs right there. Been in the same situation.
Good news: Your under-skin fat must be low. Bad news: You have lots of visceral fat. Google that. It's the fat inside your body, not directly under your skin (hence, you cannot pinch it). You will get a hernia if you don't watch out. Be careful. Also, your doc is right, do your fucking cardio.
>but is what the doctor said true? No, but stop lifting anyway. Any lbs more is a huge toll on your heart.
Luis Bennett
>The medical field itself is brilliant and amazing Nope. Google replication crisis.
Modern medicine is pretty much fake. You will realize this the more you learn about it (because, as it turns out, we have no fucking idea how a human works, how he gets ill and healthy again).
James Hall
>Weight training should be a staple in treatment of obesity for it's help with posture, insulin sensitivity, improvement of metabolism and it's relative safety and accessibility. Complete bullshit, btw.
Isaac Gonzalez
I, too, am retarded. Do you seriously believe medication doesn't do anything?
Ryan Perez
holy fucking shit dick, don't worry about weights till you do enough cardio that you're down to at least 200, jesus christ I hope you're a troll.
Cameron Bennett
Medication only masks symptoms. It doesn't actually cure anything.
Carter Scott
You also don't take vaccines and the like? Hope your detoxing shit gets you out of any health issue you have
Dylan Russell
It can 'cure' in the sense the problem goes away, it won't fix underlying issues.
Like high blood pressure. A fatty can take beta blockers to fix it, but if they don't fix their diet as well it's pointless. All of this is situational though and going through every medication would be silly. Some fix shit, some mask symptoms. Some do a little of both.
Jeremiah Rodriguez
There is a thing as building too much muscle, however not really possible for nattys. Either the doc thought you were on heavy amounts of steroids or he is confused about the natty limit. However being 5,9 250lbs+ IS ALWAYS unhealthy even if you are 10% body fat
Andrew Perez
fuck that bloatlet doctor OP
A REAL MAN WEIGHS ATLEAST 300LBS
Gavin Long
Fucking pathetic
>400 lbs
This makes me glad I have had to work shitty labor jobs my whole life because it's pretty much impossible to get fat when I'm walking and lifting 10 hours a day, fat people are disgusting
Jacob Young
>400lbs
Is it even possible for a human to be that large?
Juan Sullivan
Your thinking is irrationally black and white. Not having complete understanding of how the body works is not equivalent to having no understanding. We are considerably further along than the ancient Egyptians who believed the heart, as opposed to the brain, was the seat of conscious thought.
That's an extreme example, but your statement is a) blanket b) an oversimplification and c) ludicrous.
Another example: every single person with insulin dependent diabetes would be dead prematurely without modern medicine's discovery of the synthesis of insulin - millions of people. You yourself would also have likely died during infancy without modern medicine's understanding of the importance of water sanitation to prevent diseases like cholera and typhoid fever. You may have also succumb to, or left with horrendous deformity or disability from diseases like measles, small pox, polio, pertussis, tetanus or any of the considerable range of previously common diseases that vaccination programmes have basically eradicated.
Your statement is bafflingly, stultifyingly ignorant.
Hudson Thomas
LARGE AND IN CHARGE!!
Matthew Sanders
Post body Your doctor is retarded, weightlifting is amazing for you and is probably helping you lose weight. If you're exercising and still 400lbs, the solution isn't "do cardio/more exercise", it's "stop eating so much". There's no way you can be 400 pounds without stuffing your face, that's what's going to kill you if you don't stop.
Lucas Howard
stop eating so much fatty. genetics did not make you fat shoveling greasy sugary shit down your face made you fat.
Christopher Hughes
...
Brody Jackson
If that's all you wanted answered, you could have just gone to QTDDTOT and asked "does muscle clog your arteries when you get old?" without the obvious bait backstory.
>The fuck is the point of this board if only to insult people? Really. I'd go to /b/ if I wanted to be told I'm worthless and fat. Welcome to Veeky Forums. We literally have regular 'fat people hate' generals (don't worry, they're mostly populated by self-hating fat people trying to scare themselves straight, but it should still tip you off that you're gonna cop some shit).
Cameron Brown
Stop stucking youself full of 'za every night, how's that for advice, fatty?
Nathan Gonzalez
Do not listen to "nutritionists." Ever.
Drs have real training, anyone can call themselves a nutritionist.
If you want help with your diet, talk to a dietician who actually has to have an education and be licensed.
Lincoln Bailey
Just do keto and keep lifting OP. You can do cardio like once a week or so if you want, but it's not really necessary. A lot of cardio isn't great for your joints if you're a fat, so choose carefully. Swimming is great. Biking is probably good too. You could probably get away with heavy-bag HIT too. Just be careful, your heart is already stressed enough from being a fat.
Your main focus should be to lose fat, and the best way to do that is calorie restriction. Keto is good for excessive fat loss because you don't feel so hungry.
Owen Cook
>mfw I'm literally half your body weight
Liam Wood
I have an MD from the University of Florida, home of Shands, one of the best hospitals in the U.S., where I did my residency. Understand this:
Doctors don't know SHIT about nutrition or exercise/sports physiology. They really don't. They have a weird cobbled together sense of some excesses that are bad for you and some things most people need to do more of, and beyond that the average person with an MD manufacturing an incoherent and unreliable personal mythology of nutrition and exercise/sports physiology.
Go to your doctor to figure out what's wrong with an organ system, or to treat diabetes/heart disease/other illness. They're good at that. But physicians have less expertise in nutrition or exercise than your average college age gym rat.
Isaac Murphy
>I can feel tight abs no more than an inch deep if I poke my stomach That's visceral fat my boy
Liam Peterson
There is a thing called visceral fat that is hard fat under the skin, surrounding your organs. Your abs lie on the outside of this fat, therefore between two layers of fat. Lose weight or die
Gavin Reyes
I bet you visit chiropractors
Christopher Wood
Eh, your arguments weren't really against anything he actually said. A rock man? No.. A stick man!! No that's not it. Hay woman? Help me out...
Justin Wilson
Adding onto this, swimming is good for fatties, if you can swim that is. It won't hurt your knees like running will.
Leo Smith
Jesus Christ fatties are so fucking stupid
Henry Nguyen
>I expect actual advice, but all anyone has to offer is that classic Veeky Forums brand of venomous name calling. that guy just offered you perfectly good advice though
Christopher Baker

Eat a vegan diet
Jonathan Kelly
Go on a cut you fat fuck.
Control your calories but keep your protein up.
I'd like to see you make it, and your progress, what you look like after you shed it off. Maybe you'll grow the confidence to post your body at some point in the future. Swimming, heavy bag training, walking, and biking are all low impact exercises that will help you burn calories. Do HIIT cardio on an exercise bike.
Don't fall for the vegan meme. Don't fall for the keto meme.
Look up what your ancestors ate for most of their evolutionary existence, and then eat that while training. The good news is that you are so fat that you will be able to lose a lot of this weight without exercise. But if you wan to lose a lot really fast, create a caloric deficit and then apply the same discipline you used lifting, to any of the low impact exercises I just mentioned. Also try some explosive training, medicine balls, sprints, etc, to keep your strength up. Keep lifting as much as you can while you do this. You want to keep as much strength and muscle on during the weight loss process. It's very easy to burn everything off and become a twig if you go too ham and too crazy with the diet.
Camden Cooper
Loose weight you stupid fatass.
Jackson Gutierrez
Let's get started >We are considerably further along than the ancient Egyptians who believed the heart, as opposed to the brain, was the seat of conscious thought. Modern medicine is not able to locate consciousness, it is a complex enough topic, the brain might or might not contain or be part of "consciousness". Other animals have brains, but are they conscious? >every single person with insulin dependent diabetes would be dead prematurely without modern medicine's discovery of the synthesis of insulin And the majority of people wouldn't have developed diabetes in the first place with no standard western diet which metaphorically injects high glucemic index carbs straight into your veins. >b-but muh genetic type 1 diabetes Irrevelant, it's mostly on jewish "people" and would have gotten bred out eventually. >You yourself would also have likely died during infancy without modern medicine's understanding of the importance of water sanitation Eh, no, my dear redditor. Ancients knew very well how to make water drinkable by boiling and/or using copper or silver vessels. Let's let this one pass as you being a victim of the american educational system. >to prevent diseases like cholera and typhoid fever. You may have also succumb to, or left with horrendous deformity or disability from diseases like measles, small pox, polio, pertussis, tetanus or any of the considerable range of previously common diseases that vaccination programmes have basically eradicated. You mean stuff foreign to Europe? Yeah, nah, wouldn't have died from that, mate. >Your statement is bafflingly, stultifyingly ignorant. Ah, didn't know you were a fine cultured gentlesir with the utmost exquisite usage of those words. Consider my fedora tipped to you.
Oliver Flores
You're probably dieting and exercising all wrong bro You should be on GOMAD and SS After about three months you should be in way better shape, but also healthier IF YOU'RE CONSISTENT!!!!!!
Angel Gonzalez
EZ
Wyatt Thompson
>I can feel tight abs no more than an inch deep if I poke my stomach
> confuses the abdomen lining, holding in a ton of fat, with muscle.
Enjoy your heart attack.
Blake Lee
I have been there buddy. Like literally there.
Do Keto and lift, cut diet to 3500 for now and as you lose weight drop the calories to match. Losing weight is so hilariously easy once you get past a month it kills me I waited so long.
The reason you are mad at the advice here is because you are an addict, btw. Keto cuts out the things you are addicted to and suddenly you see your behavior for what it was.
