I'd say there are more people without good jobs because we live in a society that doesn't reward academic pursuit. I don't consider that "half assing" but I don't really care about children in the first place.

You're correct. That'll change in the coming generations since there is so much more competition for jobs. I have a bachelor's in finance and my parents never pushed me. Looking back, pretty irresponsible parenting. I'm sure it's the same for a lot of people. Both parents are uneducated.
