I am very mobile and can do squats without issues. What I do hate about squats is how much more it limits your breathing than other lifts. Squats just require a lot more work capacity than other movements.

You're bent over at the waist in a squat, so your hamstrings are being stretched. He probably has limited dorsiflexion mobility so the pull at the waist isn't relieved at the knee insertion.
