You'd be best served going to a class, at least at first, or getting a teacher to learn the movements. It's not a lot different than lifting in that respect. On the same note, if you have a good mirror, and have good kinesthetic intelligence, you can learn yourself fairly easy. As long as you aren't doing one of those dumb exercise infused yoga styles, the benefits are that you don't fuck up your lifting progress by overworking yourself on rest days, and if you do it on rest days, you get a good stretch. Flexibility and mobility are important in general fitness and health no matter what the milkman says.

There are different styles. The most common is vinyasa, or flow yoga, where you move from pose to pose under instruction. I've taken a few classes, but you could easily just follow the instructions in any video you can find (probably 30-60 minutes would be good).

Yeah, there's some room to "progress" in most poses, where you can stretch further or wider. You might decide to change it up if you get bored or want to try something more challenging.
