The reason that counterspells cost less than the spells they counter is that they have no other impact. If Bane of Bala Ged is allowed to remain on the board, it has a much greater impact on the game than a counterspell, which cannot be a permanent or repeatedly interact with the game.

He only has one land. If the first Charbelcher doesn't deal 20 damage he's probably drawn another one, cast it, and has enough mana to activate it after the first Charbelcher puts the revealed cards (including that one mountain) on the bottom of his deck.

You'd need to do that before Bane is declared as an attacker - once it is, its ability is on the stack and it doesn't matter what you do to it.
