Cool. This seems like it should make sense; maybe the regiment has a sort of "dirty paladin" vibe where they intentionally take to excessive cruelty in full knowledge that it's heresy to purge worse heretics?

They could have heard about Emps telling people not to worhsip him as a god. So they anti-religion while believing that Emperor is paragon of humanity and they are on the right side of history.
